Federal govt withdraws notification on power tariff hike
The federal government on Friday informed the Supreme Court of Pakistan that it has withdrawn a recent notification on power tariff hike.
Attorney General Munir A Malik submitted a written reply over the notification on behalf of the government before the three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
The government informed the bench that the notification issued on September 30, 2013 stands withdrawn and that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is asked to have a fresh review of the electricity prices.
He added that the government was paying Rs150 billion as subsidy for electricity.
NEPRA chairman told the Supreme Court that it may take up to three weeks to determine the electricity prices.
On Monday, the government raised power tariff by up to Rs5.89/unit. The decision was widely criticized by the general public and opposition political parties.
After much hue and cry, the Supreme Court of Pakistan took a suo moto notice over the government's move.
