Tax was as high as 52pc during the last government's tenure, says minister
Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar has said that the federal government is charging a 16.4pc tax on petrol which is one-third of the tax rate charged during the previous government of Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N).
Asad stated that the tax was as high as 52pc during the last government's tenure.
The minister was responding to a tweet by the Pakistan People’s Party leader Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui who referred to Umar’s tweet from February 2016, in which Asad had stated that “petrol price without taxes is Rs46.8 and taxes (PDL+GST) on it are Rs24.5, so the total tax on petrol is now equal to 52%”.
Wahab asked Umar if he could do the "same mathematics now?”
“The current Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) is Rs5.62 and sales tax is Rs11.76 and total tax is Rs 17.38 per litre of petrol,” the planning minister responded in a tweet.
Minister Umar added that the base price of one litre petrol is Rs105.92 at present and the total price is Rs123.3, hence the taxation rate per litre comes to 16.4pc.
Responding to the planning minister, Wahab said "as per news reports, govt is charging 10% CD & 10.54% ST on petroleum and 17% on diesel along with PDL. Taking oil price to 123 and yet you have the audacity to make such utterances. You and your govt likes to only create new records of annihilating poor people".
So this current govt has reduced tax on fuel by two thirds, yet the price of fuel is up. Why because the price of oil is increasing and the value of rupee is decreasing.
