China and Russia in engine tie-up talks with Klimov looking at next-generation powerplants including improved version of RD-93 turbofan used on Chengdu FC-1 light fighter

Russia's Klimov is looking at the possibility of joining forces with Chinese industry for the joint development of next-generation engines for fighter aircraft, helicopters and unmanned air vehicles, says general director/general designer Aleksandr Vatagin. "We are ready to work together with China on advanced projects of mutual interest, and are already working on some of them."
Speaking at last week's Airshow China in Zhuhai, Vatagin said additional areas of co-operation could include the development of new turboprop and turboshaft engines, gearboxes and auxiliary power units, plus enhanced versions of the RD-93 turbofan now in production for Chengdu's FC-1 light fighter also referred to as the JF-17 and Super-7.
Pakistan's first batch of single-engined FC-1s will be delivered next year with Russian-made RD-93s, and Vatagin says Klimov is now promoting uprated and vectored thrust versions of the powerplant for "improved Super-7 series" aircraft.
Talks are under way with the Chinese National Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC), which leads the FC-1 project, over the possible use of vectored thrust technology on future versions of the RD-93, says Vatagin. "We believe the JF-17 project will develop further with Klimov participation," says CATIC development director Li Pei.
CATIC says there are currently no talks with Klimov over licence production of the RD-93 in China, but Beijing is seeking ways of conducting in-country maintenance on the design. The Russian company says it is ready to hand over maintenance documentation for the powerplant.
In 1997, Klimov supplied its first RD-93 engines for FC-1 development prototypes, the first of which made its flight debut in August 2003. Four aircraft and one static test airframe are now being used for certification purposes. Pakistan joined the programme in the late 1990s and took part in the development of the export-standard FC-1.
CATIC will not disclose its orderbook for the FC-1, but says Pakistan is not the only third country being offered examples powered by Russian-made engines.

Looks like Russia will help China and Pak out more :) in imporving the engine of our beloved jet :flag: :flag:

I'm waitng to see if they will help on avionics and stuff aswell... Whats interesting is that China said Pakistan isn't the only country who has ordered the jet!!!! :flag: :flag:

Chinese vice president of AVIC in a news conference reiterated that "Taihang" the self-developed engine with independent intellectual propertyis the first major thrust to compete. the rights-turbofan engine.Its success indicates that the development of aviation engines has achieved three major leaps :

1.Leap from thrust engine to high-thrust engines.
2.leap from turbojet engine to turbofan engines.
3.leapfrom the second generation to third generation engine.

To the aviation industry in China is of great significance to the development and modernization of national defense.

I guess PAF figured there'd be no point in going up against the IAF when it already operates TVC in it's planes.

Are we looking towards design changes?

I'm no expert, but just from observation it seems highly unlikely that the JF-17 can pull something like this off without some changes to its design (even with an engine capable of doing it).


I wonder if the change in the LERX had all this in mind and contributes in becoming the difference.

Yeap and it makes a large plane like the MKI, highly manouverable, even though the Su-30 wasn't designed to support TVc and only added later in the MKI variant.

no mate, not the ones you are curerntly getting...the future newversions of RD engines will have TVC hopefully.

Right..it will be like a future upgrade :)

Also, I wish they can make a design change :) make it more bulkier, and more hardpoints...but something like a F/A-18 design would be kool cause it does look some what like f/a-18 depending from which angle u look at the plane from,,not saying its like f/a18 in permorance just saying looks from different angle!

TVC is not an option for the JF-17, the structural design doesn't that.
Major changes will be needed like adding up canards.

First TVC jet to enter service in PAF colors will be the FC-20 with a chinese variant of the AL-31FN.
Can't wait to see that bird fly :)

The J-10 or FC-20 will greatly enhance PAF pilots morale and a high tech fighter like this is the beginning of a new era. We should embark upon it and progress towards full scale military modernization.

No, J-10 and FC-20 aren't the same.FC-20 is J-10A with more powerfull engine and more advanced avionics and may be the twin engined J10.
