FBCCI damns Khaleda
The FBCCI on Sunday denounced BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for recently urging the United States to threaten Bangladesh with GSP cancellation and economic sanctions to save democracy.
It said such a statement from the former Prime Minister was completely unexpected at a time when the government, industrialists and workers were toiling to retain GSP facility which lets Bangladeshi apparel and other products duty-free access to the US market.
It observed that the statement will have negative impacts on the Bangladeshi sectors enjoying the GSP facility and other promising industries, ultimately hampering development.
The businesses suggested reaching a consensus on the burning issues through talks to end political standoff.
The apex business body also urged the BNP chief to withdraw the call for the sake of the country and its development.
Hours later, another statement with the similar wording condemning the appeal and voicing concern was released on behalf of 11 trade organisations.
The second statement was signed by FBCCI President Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Sabur Khan, Bangladesh Chamber of Industries President AK Azad, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Arshad Jamal Dipu and Bangladesh Textile Mills Association President Abdul Mannan Mia.
