So Faye Wong is back on tour again after a six year hiatus, and Beijing of course went crazy. Tickets originally priced at $350 was being sold on Internet auction sites for $1800+. Announcers for Beijing Metro were giving directions to concert goers.
Sadly I'm not in China this time to attend the concerts, even if I'm I'll probably spend the money on CDs rather than attending live performance (yes I'm one of the last loyal customers of old-fashioned recording shops).
Still it's a good opportunity to reflect on the sad state of Chinese pop music during the last six years when Faye Wong was away. The state of dead water is probably the best way to describe it. The only new major star is Jay Chou, the rest are pretty much talent show winners who's audience is mostly whoever voted for him/her during whatever competition he/she was in, or one hit wonders who looked very promising then dried up after two albums with the second one far worse than the first.
Pop musicians on the mainland used to complain the anti-popular music policy of certain branches of the government, which looked upon pop music as the gravest danger to human civilization (Internet **** wasn't invented back then). But now with a much more relaxed attitude from the government I don't think anyone in the music scene can still blame the government for their failure.
Anyway going back to Faye Wong. Faye is still Faye, reportedly going through an entire concert saying nothing but 'thank you' twice.
Here's a cam clip for Chinese members who want to but can't attend one of Faye's concerts.
