Raza Academy objects to Iranian film 'Muhammad: Messenger of God,' directed by Majid Majidi; to meet Rajnath and seek ban on film.
Objecting to an Iranian film Muhammad: Messenger of God, a Muslim group here has issued a fatwa against all those involved in the project, including renowned Iranian director Majid Majidi and music composer A.R. Rahman.

We are against the title. People may use it in a bad manner if they don’t like the film, which will mean an insult to the Prophet. The actors have charged money to act in the film and they may have dubious character in real life. How can we Muslims allow such things to happen?” asked Saeed Noorie, chief of Raza Academy, which initiated the fatwa that was issued by Muhammad Akhtar – the chief mufti of Mumbai.

The fatwa against Mr. Majidi, Mr. Rahman and other co-workers of this film have asked them to read kalma again and solemnise their marriage once more. “They have erred and they must apologise,” he said.

When it was pointed out that most members of the film’s crew were Muslim, Mr. Noorie said that it was more important to make them realise their mistake. “We would have been criticised if we had condemned American or Danish filmmakers. If it’s an insult, then it is an insult and the person’s religion doesn’t matter,” he said.

Mr. Noorie said the Raza Academy will be meeting Home Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to demand a ban on this film in India. “We demand that the government file a case against Mr. Rahman for hurting the feelings of Muslims,” he said.

The fatwa also asks Muslims to stage protests against the film within the ‘legal’ limits and publicly condemn it.

The 56-year-old Majidi, one of Iran’s celebrated filmmakers along with Mohsen Makhmalbaf, has directed films like Children of Heaven, which was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 1998 Academy Awards, The Color of Paradise, and Baran. He is also currently working on a film on Kashmir.

It's being made by a Muslim and we already have one film tackling the same subject. Crazies are everywhere, so why the hype?

It's not about the hyping this issue but about lack of discussion on this fatwa in Secular India.

Fatwa is actually a religious opinion or verdict and the scholar is free, I suppose, to say what he wants.

Nobody takes these fatwas seriously, least of all indian Muslims. Wasn't there one a while ago saying that men and women could only work together islamicaly if the women breastfed the men!!! I think muslims themselves gave galli to that maulana and slippered him out. I don't know why they keep coming out with this, they are alienating their own audience. ....but as for your point about the secular media silence..yes point taken

The purpose of the movie was to help give a more positive view on Islam, a view which has been damaged heavily in recent times due to the actions of the likes of people whom are making so much noise about this movie. I think giving these people publicity by spreading their foolish statements is the opposite of what should be done.

Fatwa is actually a religious opinion or verdict and the scholar is free, I suppose, to say what he wants.

Opinions and verdicts are two very different things with varying degree of enforceablity.

The scholar can be free with his opinion (though it can be an issue in matters of religious sensibilities) but only judiciary should retain the right to give verdicts.

Verdicts given by anyone else are dangerous to the delicate system we operate in, though I am not sure about it's illegality. Religious figures giving verdict in a country like India with religious tensions is an equivalent of striking a match besides keg of explosives.

Sir I am not debating the religious angel, but pointing out towards the silence of Indians who are against all ban.

I don't think that breast feeding one was from India though.

I agree, high time we have positive media about us.

True, but personally I think that the respected scholar lacks the punch to deliver any real damage, I do mean metaphorically. Plus, he hasn't insinuated violence, has he?

Oh good! I am glad even our maulanas are not that stupid. But there have been several others, on women working, on education etc and they have been met with stiff resistance from muslims themselves. If these maulanas want to remain relevant to modern muslims they need to upgrade into version 2.0 or they will disappear out of the fabric of society.
