RAMAT HASHARON,
Israel — A Palestinian man who was
severely burned in an
arson attack last
week that killed his
18-month-old son
died of his wounds early Saturday,
according to a
hospital
spokeswoman. Saad Dawabsheh, 32,
was to be buried later
Saturday. The July 31
firebombing of his
family’s home in
Duma, a West Bank hamlet, killed Mr.
Dawabsheh’s son, Ali,
and also badly burned
his wife, Riham, 27,
and their other son,
Ahmad, 4. Both of them remained
hospitalized Saturday
with life-threatening
injuries. Jewish extremists are
suspected in the firebombing, which was branded a terrorist
attack by both Israeli and Palestinian
politicians. Inbar Gutter, a spokeswoman for Soroka
Medical Center in Beersheba, said Mr.
Dawabsheh had died early Saturday morning.
Dr. Motti Klein, who runs the hospital’s
intensive care unit, said in a statement that
Mr. Dawabsheh had arrived in critical condition, with severe burns covering 80
percent of his body. Mr. Dawabsheh
underwent several
operations at the
hospital, where he
remained sedated and
on a respirator, but his condition had
deteriorated over the
past few days, Dr.
Klein said. A neighbor of the
Dawabsheh family,
Mohammad
Dawabsheh — many
residents of Duma
share the same last name — said the men
of the village had
gathered in a
mourning tent erected
at the local school and
were waiting for the body to be returned. “Everybody is sad, sadness has settled on the
village,” Mr. Dawabsheh said by telephone.
The sound of the Quran being recited was
audible in the background. Nasser Dawabsheh, Saad Dawabsheh’s
brother, told Ynet, an Israeli news website,
that he had been informed his brother had
died at 4:30 a.m. “Israel must arrest the
settlers who perpetrated this murder and
bring them to justice,” he said, according to Ynet. “Our face is to peace, but what
happened reminds us of dark days in history,
it reminds us of the deeds of the Nazis.” Witnesses and officials attributed the
firebombing to Jewish extremists because of
Hebrew graffiti sprayed nearby. “Revenge!”
was written on one wall, next to a Star of
David. It was perhaps the most shocking
incident in a summer that has been marked by repeated violence.
