Rice straw, which is usually treated as waste and burned after each harvest in Vietnam, will become a valuable export product for the country next year.
A new agreement signed on Wednesday in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho allows the state-owned Song Hau Collective Farm to sell straw from the coming winter-spring crop to the Japan Beef Import Export Association for cow feed production.
But they have not decided on the specific amount or prices, Nguyen Thanh Phu, director of Song Hau, told the media.
Yutaka Aoyama, director of the Japanese association, told Saigon Times Online that Japan needs to import around 220,000 tons of processed straw every year and nearly half of that used to come from China.
But the country has stopped sourcing from China after detecting harmful bacteria in its straw, he said.
That makes Vietnam, one of the biggest rice producers in the world, a great alternative supplier.
Phu said the new export deal is “a major opportunity” for farmers in the Mekong Delta to earn a better income.
“Usually, farmers just burn or bury the straw after a harvest, which causes air pollution or organic contamination of the soil,” he said.
Phu said the Japanese association will provide equipment and training to help his collective farm process the straw properly before exporting.
The agreement also discussed plans for the two partners to cooperate in raising milk cows in the Mekong Delta, with funding from the Japanese government.

.
how much was china getting paid for selling straw to Japan??

think a fair price would be around that or less.

A lot of money. In Vietnam, 20 to 50 million tons of rice straw are burned annually.

Yes, Vietnamese farmers in Vietnam are fricken ignorant.

....
Today, our farmer do like this. They can earn more money by collecting straw after harvest to export.

They are burning money away and bad for the environment.

Rice straws has other use. Such as mushroom farm from it.

In the end, Vietnam farmers need education on how to profit from this. There are things worth defending, burning straw is NOT one of them.

YA, you are right,

but in the past our farmer do known only the haze is not good for environment. In generally, they collected straw after harvest for other use, for building works like material for rooftop and or mixed for build wall material (of bamboo houses in villagers in the past), or for foods to animals in winter and flooding season etc.

I think the burning straw is just happened recently because farmer can have 3 to 4 harvest per year, so straw amount is very huge, our peasant didn't know how to to do with it.

Telling to peasants about disadvantages of this burning straw, I think in Vietnam the media does it best about this.

Do you have a video of that reporter talking?

Here's a thing though. I don't believe in state media, especially, the ones in Vietnam. It's state controlled and manipulated. It can say what the VCP leaders want it to say.

An Estimation of Air Pollutant Emissions from Open Rice Straw Burning in the Red River Delta

SUMMARY
This study aims to estimate the air pollutant emissions into the asmostphere caused by open rice straw burning after rice crop harvest in the Red River delta. The results revealed that the emission of CO2 is the largest, between 1.2 – 4,7 million tons per annum when the burning rate varies from 20-80%. The emission of CH4 is between 1.0 – 3.9 thousand tons per year while CO pollutant emission is between 28.3 – 113.2 thousand tons per year. The GHG mission from open rice straw burning in the Red River delta could cause the environmental damage from 19.05 to 200.3 million USD per year depending upon on open rice straw burning rate (20-80%) and on the market price of CO2 emission right in the world. Enhanced use of rice straw for mushroom production, biofertilizer, and power generation... could be the relevant ways that should be studied for mitigating the open rice straw burning in the Red River delta in the coming time. Key words: Air pollutant emission, environmental pollution, rice straw burning, Red River delta.
