The historic Farakka Long March Day will be observed in the country today.
Some political parties and social organisations will hold seminar and discussion meeting focusing the significance of the day.
On this day (May 16) in 1976 popular leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani led a massive Long March from Rajshahi towards Indias Farakka Barrage demanding its demolition.
Thousands of people took part in the long march which was stopped by the law enforcing agencies at Kansat, barely 8km away from the Farakka Barrage.
Maulana Bhashani held a public meeting at Kansat when he issued stern warning to India against diverting waters of the River Ganges during the winter.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a message on the eve of the occasion said Farakka Day was important in the history of our national movement.
Farakka Barrage over the River Ganges located in the Indian state of West
Bengal, roughly 16.5 kilometres (10.3 miles) from the border opposite Chapainawabganj.
In 13 phases of the current lean period, India has given Bangladesh 82,000 cusecs less water that it was stipulated in the Ganges Water sharing agreement.
The government has protested thrice for depriving agreed share of the water. But India paid no heed.
