Where do you think the disdain for darker skin came from
I'd place my money on British colonialism in India and seeing how black Africans were treated like crap.
A guy used to work with was sent a group of pictures of women his parents had narrowed down for him to marry.
He had some kind of darkness color chart he was using up against their faces trying to figure out their exact darkness grade.
The rest of us shook our heads and said "this has got to be one more British caused mess"
I dont think I will blame british for this. Fair skinned women and slightly dark skinned men are desirable in India, thats what many of our folk songs and local sayings say.According to me, this particular obsession has its roots in the "slave mindset" that the people of this particular region have developed due to the so called superior "White masters" who ruled over them. If it won't be about the skin tone of an individual we would find some other reason to look down upon others. Human beings like to impose their own respective concepts of beauty and morality on others. It is in no way limited to a particular region.
lol yea perhaps. I think it was highlighted by the introduction of "AIT" to the mass. But I think this phenomena also exists among other non white Caucasians aswell. Perhaps the issue is not as severe as the one in the subcontinent.I'd place my money on British colonialism in India and seeing how black Africans were treated like crap.

BTW Indian idea of beautiful skin color is not pale white of british, rather a few shade darker. I am pretty sure most Indians find the reddish color(seen many germans with that skin) white skin repulsive, I do.
and I believe its inherent bias in our society nothing to do with colonial past. Fair and handsome is a relatively recent phenomena, and one can blame either advertisers or girls for that. lolz.I didn't get an alert for this. I am not necessarily blaming the British but its a fact that the colonized people do tend to look up towards their masters with awe and how they are perfection incarnate. In a lot of way we have shed that attitude but somewhere down the line we still are biased and continue to nurture a complex against those with darker skin tones. I agree not as pale as a British but still fair complexion is considered beautiful and the obsession reaches a point where people spend most of their hard earned money on skin lightening creams. I thought it was "tall, dark and handsome" not "short, fair and obviously if fair enters the equation, handsome".

Why blame the advertisers? They are running a business afterall. Do you think the people of south asia had similar ideals prior to the mughalai and British occupation of India?Blame advertisers and empty headed, insecure men for that.
Quite good I been using them for years lol.How effective are those skin lightening creams anyways?
