My question here is that, is there any other aircraft which can be used for wild weasel and if not, why other aircrafts cannot be used for wild weasel missions
and if yes which r those aircrafts?
Many other aircraft can be used for wild weasel missions. The aircraft needs to have a good air to ground weapon handling system and radar seeking missiles.
F4 Phanton was the most popular wild weasel. Also A10 Thunderbolt, F15, F16 and in some cases F18 are assigned such missions.
In future F35 is supposed to do these.
These r all American aircrafts. Do you want to say that only American aircrafts can perform wild weasel missions or you meant that only American aircrafts r battle proven for wild weasel????
Gents...These r all American aircrafts. Do you want to say that only American aircrafts can perform wild weasel missions or you meant that only American aircrafts r battle proven for wild weasel????A wild weasel is primarily a term popular in US Airforce. Basically its a role requiring strong radar detection, SAM protection and A2G strike. Out of the soviet lot, Mig 25 foxbat and Su 30 are the aircraft from that airforce that fit the bill..
What happens is that one ground launcher send a missile towards a flight of incoming aircrafts. Then two or more ground radars begins to alternately 'on-off' their transmissions. The missile that they launched are still radar guided, albeit at somewhat degraded quality. For the Wild Weasels, what can they employ in their repertoire to ensure success against this 'blinking' tactic, which is well known since the Vietnam War?Further, the decoys are caused to "blink". That is to say, the position in time, relative to the defended radar of each of the decoys is periodically altered. As a result of such "blinking" the aim point of the ARM is caused to wander, thereby preventing the ARM from homing on the radar or any one of the decoys.
Except in this instance, we got the combat records to back up what we claimed. We are not saying the F-16 is the best EVER. We are saying that for SEAD missions, the F-16 has proven to be the producer of high benchmarks time and time again. An F-16 pilot's job is not dependent upon these claims. If the F-16 is supplanted by a superior fighter, he will be moved to another fighter.Guys I don't want to discourage or undermine the capability of F-16 but living in USA for past some years, I have noticed one particular thing, everyone is trying to promote their business as best in the market, you see medical product company they say they are leader in the market, u see unknown software company, they say they are leaders in software blah blah! so it's all part of American culture to promote their product as the best in the world! Marketing is very aggressive in this part of the world, it is done by everyone whether be a prof, teacher, sales man, engineer or a pilot! their jobs are dependent on this!
The best characteristics of the F-16 that made it a formidable SEAD fighter is its maneuverability and small size. For any ground missile launcher that has a separate truck for the antennas, even the explosion from a grenade will disable it for some time. No battery commander will launch his missiles if he does not feel adequately informed by radar, his own or from other sources. Missiles are throwaway weapons often with no guarantees of returns, aka successful hits.@gambit
What are the characteristics of F 16 that make it so good for SEAD ops ??
