WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has halted deliveries of Lockheed Martin's F-35 after finding an alloy used in magnets for pumps on the fighter jet were made in China.

The F-35 programme office "temporarily paused the acceptance of new F-35 aircraft to ensure the F-35 programme's compliance" with defence regulations "pertaining to specialty metals", Defence Department spokesman Russell Goemaere said in an email.

He said the pause will not interfere with operations of F-35s already delivered to the US military and partners abroad because "the magnet does not transmit information or harm the integrity of the aircraft and there are no performance, quality, safety or security risks associated with this issue".

Once the issue was discovered, the F-35 programme office found an alternative source for the alloy that will be used in future turbomachines, Mr Goemaere says.

Lockheed said in a statement that "we are working with our partners and DoD to ensure contractual compliance within the supply chain".

The contractor said the F-35 remains safe for flight, "and we are working with the DoD to resolve the issue as quickly as possible to resume deliveries".

The turbomachine integrates the aircraft's auxiliary power unit and an air cycle machine into a single piece of equipment that provides electrical power for ground maintenance, starting of the main engine and emergency power. BLOOMBERG

This is why I say US is being hysteric

No, the US told manufacturers they are to source everything from suppliers that cant be shutdown...and one manufacturer messed up.

Remember one of the key events in WW2 was to bomb a ball-bearing plant in Germany which the Germans hadn't realized was so critical in much of their equipment. They hadn't bothered moving it or protecting it. The tiniest of parts can make a big difference.

No, they just don't want any supply chain issues/interruptions.

It's quite impressive that every part has been traced so well that even a simple magnet in a machine has been identified.
how so? i mean it made it all the way into the plane when it wasnt suppose to...
and such tracing isnt even impressive, i worked in supply chain, buying/planning . country of origin for your materials and goods is pretty basic stuff.

Most of the so called Europe or US supplied just re package the from China imported and claim as domestic made but jerk up 4-5 times the price. :enjoy:
