The Americans will not confront the Russians directly over Ukraine. What they want is Russia to invade so they can embroil it in another Afghanistan type quagmire which they can then exploit. On the one hand they will have an opportunity to damage a strategic rival and on the other they will be selling arms to the Ukrainians at inflated prices.
Win win.
They did a similar thing at the time of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. They let it be known that they would no have a view either way if Iraq invaded Quwait in order to encourage the Iraqis to occupy Quwait. Once the deed was done they used it to destroy Iraq on the one hand and milk the Gulf Arab countries and Saudi Arabia on the other.
The strategic objectives this time may be different but the playbook is essentially the same.

I agree, there are caveats to this.

- Russia went all native and Chechnya and forces its will with brutality, while it was very weak at the time
- Russia went into kahazkistan recently again completely suppressing the insurgence with brute force
- Russia went to Syria and though the west , turkey and the Arabs were all on one side Russia defeated all of Asad’s enemies wrestling back control of 95% of the country

When it comes to Ukraine Russia sees its move into the western axis as an existential threat to its sovereignty. They will do any thing to take back Ukraine as all major invasions Russia faced in the last 100+ years have come via the planes of Ukraine. So I understand and even agree with your perspective of the NATO thinking but I disagree with the conclusion. Russia will invade and take over all of Ukraine forcing a pro Russia goverment to take hold with possible Russian bases in country.

I think the real target of all this is what happened already.
It's not real war.
It's just break diplomatic ties and poison relations between West Europe and Russia. That's all.

Well, better that than real war.

But it's against west european people interests making troubles to Russia, in a short term due to natural gas prices, in the long term due to possible war.

Kiev authorities said already, Russian troops move in Russian territory is not a new thing, it's happen since years, the only new is that western massmedia talk about that to justify sent weapons and troops to East Europe.
