Science, yes some fields are comparable but look at the global innovation index for 2018, only three small European countries (we don't count) are above the US everyone else including Germany and France are below. Now couple that with the sheer size of the US economy and that should give you an indication as to why they are ahead.

Not really. Just Russia alone beat out America in most aspects of space race. If Europe participated in the space race in the 1960s and 1970s they would have beat America badly.

Other than putting a man on the moon first, Russia beat out America in everything else. First space suit, first man in space, first satellite of Earth, first space walk, first landing on another planet, first moon orbiter, first moon lander, first robotic sample return from moon, first rover, first space station, first modular space station, first fully automated space shuttle.
