The European Union "regrets" the United States' decision to intensify its oil embargo against Iran, a European Commission spokesperson said Tuesday, warning that the move would further undermine the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran.

The United States on Monday demanded that buyers of Iranian oil stop purchases by May 1 or face sanctions, ending six months of waivers which allowed Iran's eight biggest buyers – including Turkey, China and India – to continue importing limited volumes.

The move "risks undermining the implementation" of the nuclear deal, said EU foreign policy spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic.

The EU will "continue to abide by (the deal) as long as Iran continues with full and effective implementation," she added.

Tehran has repeatedly threatened to withdraw from the deal if Washington tightens its sanctions aimed at Iranian oil exports.

The sanctions were imposed after U.S. President Donald Trump decided unilaterally to withdraw the U.S. from the deal. But Iran and the other countries continue to abide by the agreement, which places strict limits on Iran's nuclear program to prevent the country from building nuclear weapons.

Iran had been promised the lifting of economic sanctions for abandoning its nuclear weapons program.

In January, Germany, France and Britain launched a financial tool to help European firms with legitimate business interests in Iran avoid U.S. sanctions. But this entity is still not yet operational, EU diplomats confirmed Tuesday.

Greece, Italy, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan -- have already ended or heavily reduced their purchases from Iran.

The other three countries who received waivers are Turkey, China and India, with Ankara and Beijing condemning U.S.' unilateral sanctions.

China warned Tuesday that the U.S. decision will "intensify turmoil" in the Middle East and in the international energy market.

"China firmly opposes the U.S. implementation of unilateral sanctions and its so-called long-armed jurisdiction," foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular press briefing.

"The relevant move by the United States will intensify the turmoil in the Middle East and the turmoil in the international energy market."

For its part, China will "continue to work in order to safeguard the lawful and legitimate rights of Chinese companies," Geng said.

Turkey criticized the U.S. decision on Monday, with Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu saying the move "will not serve regional peace and stability, yet will harm Iranian people."

"#Turkey rejects unilateral sanctions and impositions on how to conduct relations with neighbors," he wrote on Twitter.

India, however, said Tuesday it will buy crude oil from other major oil producing countries in view of the United States' decision.

External Affairs Ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar said the Indian government would continue to work with partner nations, including the United States, to find ways to protect India's energy and economic security interests.

India bought 23.6 million tons of Iranian oil in the financial year ending in March 2019, said Y.K. Baweja, India's Petroleum Ministry spokesman. He did not give details of India's plans after the U.S. waiver ends on May 2.

Iran was the third largest oil supplier for India after Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Imports account for more than 80% of India's oil needs.

The sanctions would choke off more than $50 billion a year in Iranian income, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in Washington on Monday.

Iran's Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh said Tuesday that the United States has made a bad mistake by politicizing oil and using it as a weapon.

"America has made a bad mistake by politicizing oil and using it as a weapon in the fragile state of the market," Zanganeh in a parliamentary session, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

Zanganeh added that the United States will not be able to reduce Iran's oil exports to zero.

"With all our power, we will work toward breaking America's sanctions," Zanganeh said in parliament, according to the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA).

Oil prices on Tuesday hit their highest level since November after Washington's announcement.

. . . . . . .
American terrorism must stop. And I think turkey China and India should not stop their deal with Iran. What can US do to these three if they stick together. I don't think European countries would let some economical turmoil in turkey. US won't be able to do shit to China and India. It all depends if these 3 stick together. Many wont agree but it what world need right now. A nutjob is running US and their bullying must be stopped at all cost

. .
Irrespective of which country, everyone will comply. Including China, wanna bet?;)

Any move by Beijing to keep buying Iranian oil — which analysts predicted China almost certainly will find some way to do — would force the United States to decide whether to impose sanctions on Chinese financial institutions, which are increasingly important in the worldwide economy. China could also set up a new vehicle as an alternative to using the current banking mechanisms, as the European nations have done to keep doing some business with Iran.

100% TRUE.

Turkey and China is fine, but India? We must do everything we can to break Iran-India connection.
Sir with due respect Iran India nexus could be broken with some good foreign policies by our govt. The need of this time is to stop the monkey that's the president of US. Sanctions are the most powerful weapon US uses and they must be stopped. After Iran they can put sanctions on Pak like they have done before.

China is already in a trade war with the US and close to making a deal. The US sanctioned Huawei and arrested it's CFO without blinking an eye, causing a ruckus and all you did was mess with Canada, without touching US who is the real reason. Of all the bravado you try to pose here, you silently comply with US.

Stopping the US with what, your largest export partner is the US. Also get some GSP on certain goods. Similar is the case with India, China and these are replaceable goods which we export because of the generally good relation with the US.

We've been dealing with US for decades and they keep accusing us this and that, when did we listen and change what we have been doing? they just talk and we just ignore.

As for the ongoing trade war between China and US, who is winning?
