Turkey's purchase of S-400 missile defense system from Russia has "nothing to do" with NATO, F-35 fighter jets or security of the U.S., President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.

"Everyone knows that this issue has nothing to do with neither NATO and F-35 project nor the security of the U.S.," Erdogan told a meeting of Turkey Youth Foundation (TUGVA) in the southeastern Diyarbakir province.

Erdogan said Turkey is facing pressure against buying S-400 air defense system, adding: "The issue is not about S-400. It is because Turkey takes action with its own will regarding the regional developments, particularly Syria."

"It is clear why Turkey is buying this air defense system and how will it use it," he added.

Erdogan also said that this issue will be solved through logic and common sense.

After protracted efforts to purchase air defense systems from the U.S. with no success, Ankara decided in 2017 to buy Russian S-400 air defense systems.

The move was criticized by the Pentagon, which warned that purchasing the S-400 would hurt Turkish-U.S. relations and Turkey's role in NATO.

Ankara is also planning to purchase 100 F-35 fighter jets from the U.S. pending congressional approval, and its pilots are currently training on the weapons platform at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.

Turkish firms also supply the F-35 program with key components, including airframe structures and assemblies, and the center fuselages.

The problem doesn't seem to be S-400 at all. The problem is, you are a part of NATO, whose very basis is to oppose everything and everyone that competes with American dominance. They were designed to counter Soviet Union, and other ideological powers.

The premise of joining the alliance by Turkey was that Turkish military ideology and doctrine would be aligned to a common western narrative established by European and North American powers.

When Turkey bought S-400, that very premise was violated.

Hence the whole contention about S-400 has been taking place. Ever seen Germany or Poland induct anything Russian or Chinese in their forces?

Maybe if Turkey exits NATO, it will have lesser challenges in inducting third-party military assets.

What If same westerners support a terrorist organization Although Turkey voiced concern and ethic rules of alliance ? USA follows such a strategy to set up the rules over the Turkey;
  • FETO based coup attempt (USA harbors almost all FETO leadership in their soil)
  • Economical threatens and attacks based on dollar
  • Supporting a terrorist organization at South of Turkey to disturb Turkiye while providing a protection umbrella
  • Military level sanctions with voicing;
  1. Brunson detention
  2. S-400 purchase
  3. Russian/Turkey joint actions
If one of those strategies served the purpose to take delivery of Turkiye politically, Neither They would have armed YPG, nor voiced likely sanctions. If It worked well, they would have already converted Turkey into a satellite who is moving from remote-controlled orders as they enjoys with Gulf Arabs so The main reason of those disturbance regarding any subject related with Turkiye is about Turkey’s struggle to lead an independent policy in any field. Turkey-Russian approach is the main subject but S-400 is just solid tool to use against us. If they were the man of their words, They would have voiced same concern When Greece ordered a huge Korner ATGM instead of US or European equivalents. No need to mention Greece is the operator of Russian SA-8, Tor-M systems, Zubr Crafts. Nobody warned Greece when they were under negotiation to purchase BMP-3 IFV before economic crisis hit them.

I completely understand what you say, buddy. But the thing is, they are leading that particular faction aka NATO. You want to be in the group, so you have to follow the rules they set. Honestly, I personally feel that Turkey has outgrown NATO and doesn't need it any more.

Your deals with Russia ensure that Russians see you more as a lucrative customer than as an adversary any time in the near future; Europeans are not going to invade you because their armies are not strong enough and neither does the common European public have any interest in fighting any more wars that too with a strong nation which can retaliate.

US knows that you are not a pushover and sees no benefit in invading you as it has to invade Venezuela and Hungary after that (unless Iran or North Korea crop up again).

The only state in NATO threatening Turkiye with sanctions is US. For exm, France is the one who supports decision of Turkiye regarding S-400 and implying on attitudes of US spokemen as being stepped into other’s affairs. If you check their objection history regarding S400, you will see they firstly told impossibility of integration of S400 into NATO network. Later, When they realised Turkiye is serious for this deal, They raised the volume with using F-35 delivery as a tool. Today, They are talking about total sanctions including spare parts. What I mean NATO don’t have a common understanding to block countries not to deal with non-NATO states. There is just one big head in this club who wants to shape the states with showing their teeths and Turkiye is the one who likes giving middle finger to such big mouths. That is the story of whole event.

Actually 3 other NATO members operate Russian air defence systems, Greece and two others from former Warsaw pact..

The former WP countries haven't inducted anything new from Russia and most likely are using the last bit of the in-service equipment. NATO is sure that once their service life is over, their newer purchases would be Western.

Greece might be an anomaly here. Maybe Turkey should take up the issue in the next NATO summit and ask why are they given special favours.

If you get a half-hearted answer, then Turks should consider exiting NATO.

they just aply to turkey and no one else..

this is just some rabbit they got out of their magic hat :)

I agree.

It makes sense for Turkey to come out of NATO, now that you have established good ties with both Russia and the West.

It would be better to operate as a regional power on your own terms rather than be bound with rules which only apply to you.

USA economic is base on creating weapon and selling those weapons ... and Turkey as an allied USA country doesn't want to buy USA made weapon .... The Weapon Industry Lobby in USA is in raged about this decision ...

well , by highlighting Iran threat , they tighten their grip around Arab world oil reserves and sell so many weapons in them ... also they have force Arab to pay for "protection" to USA .... Trump said it clearly ...

Isreal is not a divine place for the western ( and they are not that religious any more ) , they just use it to not let ME see a period of stability which due the cultural and historical background will lead to creation of anti western empire ....

Turkey definitely needs a surface to air missile system ( currently a weak spot ), however it is wrong that the US refused to sell the patriot system which forced TR to go to Russia. On the other hand, this is all playing well into Russian interests. Their goals are to disrupt US foreign policy objectives in the region ( hence why they went into Syria, are collaborating with Iran, etc,) and now they have managed to damper the TR-US relationship. I have to say Putin and his advisers plated this brilliantly. The reason I mention this is because of Russia's long term strategic vision of a multi-polar world where Russia dominates central Asia and the Middle East, and looking at the last 4 years Russia has made significant progress to position itself as the leader, and it has done much to undermine US interests in the region as well. This also goes directly into the heart of NATO unity, and regional cooperation that the US has with TR.

A never-ending chess game.
