KARACHI: The electric bike was officially launched in Karachi on Sunday, during a public ceremony that took place at Sea View. The E-bikes were taken for a test drive by people in attendance, as reported by PakWheels.

According to PakWheels, the electric bike commonly known as E-bike, comes with a electric engine and runs on chargeable batteries. Athar Ahmed Khan, the owner of TAZ Trading which imports E-bikes in Pakistan, hopes to replace the 70cc bikes with this eco-friendly alternative.

TAZ Trading has already sold 25 bikes in Faisalabad and is hopeful about the future of these bikes in Pakistan after the launch in Karachi.

The E-bike runs on rechargeable batteries which is an eco-friendly option that can help reduce the high amounts of air and noise pollution in Pakistan. The report also stated that when it comes to speed, the E-bike can do 60 kilometres per hour and close to 70 kilometres per unit of electricity. The Energy Conservation Department of K-electric did an analysis which shows that for every nine kilometres the cost is one rupee. In the duration of one charge, the bike can cover a distance of up to 100 kilometres, which means that the running cost can be reduced by up to 90 per cent.

Problem with alternate energy sources and these bikes is Battery life and price which effect cost. Is battery price and life is included for calculation per Km? What does company claim about battery life?

If most of our electricity was produced by hydel, solar or wind and consumed to charge the batteries; electric bike would be truly environment friendly. However, we are going to produce electricity from coal and the same is going to charge the batteries, it hardly makes any difference. In fact disposal of battery acid and old batteries could really make it worse.

Additionally, we are short of electric power; adding new power generation capacity takes years; whereas gasoline import takes only about 15 days. Nevertheless, any new industry that creates employment is good for Pakistan.

Electric bikes normally cost more to produce and lack performance of the petrol engined machines, I hope the owners have done due diligence before investing in the plant.

I thought Pakistan had electricity crisis! Wouldn't electric cars, bikes just increase the demand of electricity? Better ban them than let them consume valuable electricity unnecessarily, unless of course they are for exports.

Jolta Electric Bikes are now Being assembled in Gwadar Free Economic Zone Balochistan

Company has already secured a deal for delivery of 2,500 e-bikes for Gwadar Free Zone Company to make it a pollution free and emission free region.

Company said that it has plans to invest $10 million in Pakistan in two phases by setting up an assembly unit followed by a manufacturing unit.

Jolta said that it also intends to produce e-cars and and shuttle buses down the line

25 bikes is a very small number for economies of scale concept. They need to sell far more to be making a profit. I smell the fate of these bikes to be the same as Adam Revo. Pakistanis do not buy Pakistani. Look at what is happening with bollywood craze in our country. Many Pakistani brands have fallen in the past decades. Unfortunate reality that Pakistani brands fail not only to compete with international brands but also fail on the marketing side which means few people know or are made to care about a (good?) product.

Pakistan is expected to sort out Energy crisis in 2018 by then thanks to the large investment on energy sectors such as Solar, Wind, Hydro and more. So this is good plan for the long run. Besides, this is just beginning given more plants will be joining soon. :D

Sir dont you think that power generation units are much more effecient then motor cycle engine furthermore government has virtually decided not to invest further on fossil fuel other than thar coal so energy mix of future is much higher from renewable.

I feel your concern is being addressed by government in next 20 years plans

It does not take that much to charge these bikes. BTW, we have plenty of electricity, we just need to stop electricity thief.

Your argument appears valid on the surface, however, on critically analyzing the facts, the conclusions would be different.

It is correct that Electric motor vehicles convert about 60% of the electric energy from the grid to the wheels, whereas gasoline vehicles only about 20%. However, coal-burning power plants efficiency is between 35-40% whereas CRC gas-fuelled power generators can achieve up to 55%.

Thus only about 24% of the heat energy from coal and 30% from the gas is converted into motion in case of electric vehicles against about 20% of gasoline heat content for standard motor cars, but that is not all.

One must not ignore:

“Distribution Sector considered as the weakest link in the entire power sector. Transmission Losses is approximate 17% while Distribution Losses is approximate 50%.”

Even if we assume a very efficient power transmission & distribution system; energy loss from the Power plant connection to the electric vehicle charger would be at least 20%. Thus overall %age conversion of the energy content of the fuel into the wheels is not much better in the case of electric vehicles.

Primary reason for the bias towards electric vehicles by the governments is the “Environment”. All of the new power plants to be constructed in the EU countries must have CO2 capture systems installed, not possible in case of gasoline/diesel burning motor vehicles. Standard motor vehicles are undoubtedly the biggest polluters of air everywhere.

I don’t see new power plants in Pakistan using Carbon Capture Technology in the near future and we remain woefully short on electric power for the households & the industry. Do we want to divert power from households to the motor vehicles like we did with the natural gas in case of CNG cars?

My skepticism about the wholly electric vehicles in Pakistan is therefore valid for the foreseeable future. In the near term, hybrid motor vehicles are the best option. However, when Pakistan has a large surplus power generation capacity and has carbon capture on her power plants; electric powered automation would be most welcome.

But coal is dirt cheap in comparison to gasoline
