What's new

Elections every five years a tragedy: PM Imran Khan

So he's certain that he's not getting re-elected?

Well PM Sahab, you should have planned instead of just giving hyperbolic statements before the elections.

In fact scratch that. Just show us what you have done in the time that you have had.

.
Which 40 years of f@@@ing up you are talking about? Are you talking about 1980 to 2020 than Zia and Mushi ruled in same era.... 8 years of Mushi and 11 years of Zia. Lot of things occured in last 40 years. But i'm really curious about how much you actually can explain.
Bro I am talking about blunders in last 40 years.. and even tho Zia and Mushi had higher GDP growth rate there were mistakes and corruption in their era too... and that corruption is what has destroyed out country along with no long term planning and no beneficial policies...

Zia gave us Nawaz who has been a "Nasoor"... and Mushi had a lot of corrupt bureaucrats and politicians on his side and whatever good he did was reversed by Zardari or Nawaz a small example is local govt system which was created in Mushi era was completely dead by 2015 and was restarted after much pressure and is being worked on now... and even tho PMLN started it because of pressure they played politics in that too... gave 5000 to 6000 people to their councilors while 34000 to 36000 to opposition councilors in one area of Islamabad imagine the other areas..

.
Well maybe if he performs well he can get another 5 year term and keep implementing policies. Or is he actually saying that 5 years is not enough to show any progress? Lolz he is the same guy who said corruption will end in 90 days n gave tall claims.

Sir can you elaborate where in the original article posted that the things discussed in the thread are written?
Infact the news article heading is twisted to give that impression.

We were discussing the topic because it was interesting, but that's not what he said.

What PM IK actually said is 'because elections happen every 5 years in Pakistan governments has always made short sighted decisions. Like no big dams etc. :-)

Bro he never said that, read the article. He is saying because elections happen every 5 years every government has made short sighted plans for the next election and there has been no focus on long term planning. Like big dams etc.

He has already taken the brunt of most difficult decisions in relation to economy, Market valuation of rupee and autonomy of state bank (financial constrain going forward) which resulted in manageable CAD and Primary surplus respectively. That brought the twin deficits under control at a huge political cost but they have to be maintained as well (Government will have little room to maneuver as financial constraints will remain both import related and fiscal discipline (export diversification and inland revenue increase is a time consuming process).
This going is election year is not good.

There are a few things left that are very critical especially in power sector especially in relation to DISCO's and IPP's (In works).

Local gas vs RLNG tariff rationalization (need of the hour as our gas reserves output is falling 15% per annum approx) before it becomes a full on crisis. This is the most difficult of all.

All of these things are necessary, but will further deplete his political capital. He is secure for this term but he is the most unlucky prime minister of all time. If God Forbid he looses he will leave behind a fertile land for another term of loot and plunder and the cycle continues. By the end of next cycle our enemies will be far ahead of us and any confrontation is a lost cause. Look where has India and Bangladesh gone from 2008 to 2018. Even Bangladesh exports were less than us in 2008 now look where they stand let alone India.

PMIK still has time to deliver, however, it is running short, and the indications are not encouraging that he will be able to make any useful, or enduring, changes in any meaningful way. We shall soon know the end result, and the aftermath if it is as you fear.

Prime Minister Imran Khan Thursday said no nation could move forward without long-term planning and it was tragic that governments in Pakistan could not make long-term planning due to the general election every five years.

Addressing a function here in connection with documentary-drama (Paani ke Pankh), he termed the 10 years of PPP and PML-N governments from 2008 through 2018 the decade of darkness, marred by massive corruption, political expediency and inefficiency.

“When criminals become country heads, then no country can develop. So, one has to have faith in oneself. There are talented Pakistanis in every field outside Pakistan. The country’s system has to be fixed,” he said.

“It takes a little time; people should not worry that the change has not come yet. It takes time to change the mindset. It’s tragic that in our country elections are held every five years due to which we do not have a long-term plan,” he continued.
He said dams were built with a long-term plan and cited China as a country that is becoming the world's fastest growing economic power and superpower because of long-term planning.

“When we visited China, they told us what they were going to do in the next 10 to 20 years. No nation can move forward unless it has a long-term plan and thinks ahead. Unfortunately, we have a period of five years. We try to accomplish everything in five years, spend billions of rupees on advertisements and then fight elections on it,” he pointed out.

Imran believed that this handicap had done a lot of damage to Pakistan. “We have made decisions in a short period of time due to which we generate the most expensive electricity in the entire subcontinent. Whether we buy electricity or not, the agreements are such that in 2013 we had to pay Rs180 billion a month to the power producers as compulsory payment. When our government came, it was Rs500 billion,” he noted.

I didn't vote for him last time, infact I didn't even vote. I mocked/criticized him right here on this forum.

Now, I like him. His governance is much better than others.

I hope he continues the good(and necessary) work.

And judging by how it's going, I'll most likely vote for him/PTI to continue the good work.

He is right ...we should declare him King of Pakistan....or PM for life...

The changes he made are the fundamental cornerstone to achieve a sustainable balanced growth. Economic prosperity is not a 5 year game.
I can tell from first hand experience the sentiment in business community is positive.

It's not a question of 'we shall soon see' we have suffered through it in our past. Due to this cycle we have already wasted a decade, a decade that our rivals have taken advantage to the fullest. It's a question of can we afford an another such decade.
He is right ...we should declare him King of Pakistan....or PM for life...

Have you read the article?

He never said anything like that. What he said that due to elections every 5 years no government has focused on long term plan instead were short sighted. Like no big dams etc.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilyhi rajioon....

Why? Have you read the article bro?

The heading is deceptive.

I am not sure if Imran Khan is strong enough to be PM... He's an OK figure and all, but I want him to downgrade to CM-Punjab. And allow more Islamic Nationalist to assume the role of PM+President.

The sentiment of wanting stable and development oriented continuity is understandable, but democratic elections are a necessity so that leaders don’t get full of themselves and act beyond their mandate.

He can work on the issues that prevent continuity of good governance.

1. A mass literacy program with a special emphasize on civics
2. building up democratic and regulatory institutions with full investigative and arrest powers
3. privatizing many industries but keeping them regulated
-so they don’t become the political pawns of the party in power
-but also don’t allow the industrialists to gouge the consumer with unfair prices; I.e. go beyond a reasonable price reflective of the market price of their commodities
- require them to invest back into the companies so they keep up to date and are competitive and don’t need to be bailed out down the line
-do right by the workers

If he can get these 3 things done in the rest of this term, he will have set the nation on a path of continuity beyond his time in office, however long that is. People can then see if they are happy, and will have the choice to vote him back in or not. He should trust the voters to see he is doing right by them.

Were you residing in Pakistan from 2008-18?

He is talking about long term planning and execution, like in China because of single party government and despite change in the leadership, the policy remain effective. The major reason why China surpassed every single country in the world in the speed of development and bringing its population out of poverty.

Hahhahah :p

Ofcourse he is PM, he would want his term to end when he dies.
