(Reuters) - Egypt's army-backed government has resigned, state-run Al Ahram said on its website on Monday in a report confirmed by an Egyptian official.

The newspaper, citing an unnamed source, said the decision was made after a 15-minute meeting of the cabinet. Army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is expected to run for president, was part of the cabinet, serving as defense minister.

BBC News - Egypt interim government resigns unexpectedly

Egypt's military-backed interim government has resigned, Prime Minister Hazem Beblawi has announced.

Mr Beblawi gave no reason for the decision in his televised statement.

The state-run al-Ahram newspaper, citing unnamed sources, reported that outgoing Housing Minister Ibrahim Mihlib was expected to succeed him.

Mr Beblawi was appointed prime minister in July after the military overthrew President Mohammed Morsi following mass protests against his one-year rule.

Al-Ahram said the cabinet's decision to submit its resignation to interim President Adly Mansour was made after a meeting attended by the armed forces chief and Defence Minister, Field Marshal Abdul Fattah al-Sisi.

The field marshal is widely expected to announce soon that he will step down from both posts and run for president.

According to the new constitution approved in January, an election must take place by mid-April. Correspondents say Field Marshal Sisi would be likely to win, given his popularity and the lack of any serious rivals.

It's sad to see greatest Arab country in this situation. Hope Egypt sort it all out and reach stability just like few decades ago.

lol...egyptians don't deserve 'rule of themselves'...they always need a foreign tool like Mubarak or Sisi to govern them. How pathetic.

Feild Marshal Al Sisi ....
Now it makes sense...

This is a cabinet reshuffle of a government that is incredibly unpopular, both for its incompetency and its politics but the former is whats really making it unpopular. This has nothing to do with Field Marshal/Elsisi he will remain at his post as the head of the armed forces until the government is reformed where he will be reappointed as defence minister, this has almost nothing to do with him.

The cabinet is the government in Egypt. It can be compromised of elected and unelected ministers, under Morsi and Mubarak the overwhelming majority were unelected. This doesn't change anything, really. The next elections are the presidential ones (in around a month) then after that it's the parliamentary elections.
