Tehran, May 3, IRNA -- Egyptian Parliamentarian Atef Abd al-Maqaweri on Thursday called for strengthening of ties between Iran and Egypt.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Special Advisor to Supreme Leader on International Relations Ali Akbar Velayati in Tehran.

“As far as Iran and Egypt enjoyed historical ties, Egypt is in need of strengthening ties with the strong neighboring country in the Middle East region,” Abd al-Maqaweri said.

He has led an Egyptian delegation including lawmakers, leaders of political parties and journalists to Iran.

Al-Maqaweri said that the aim of the delegation to visit Iran is to get further acquaintance with Iran.

The lawmaker said the need for expansion of ties is reciprocal because both Iran and Egypt have the tendency to expand ties in different fields.

Abd al-Maqaweri in the meeting with Velayati who is also the Secretary General of Islamic Awakening Forum said Iran would play an important role for the Islamic Awakening in the region.

Velayati meets visiting Egyptian parliamentary team

TEHRAN – An Egyptian parliamentary delegation, who arrived in Tehran on Thursday, held talks with Ali Akbar Velayati, the secretary general of the World Assembly of the Islamic Awakening.

The assembly has hosted a number of conferences on the Islamic Awakening which has so far led to the toppling of President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia, Moammar Gadhafi of Libya, and Ali Abdullah Saleh of Yemen.

MP Atef Abdul al-Moghavari, a member of the Egyptian delegation, said Cairo needs to consolidate relations with Tehran as a powerful country in the Middle East.

Commenting on the Islamic Awakening movement in the region, the Egyptian MP said that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always had a prominent role in the development of the movement in the region.

Egypt hopes that the Islamic Republic will share its experience on various areas and promote parliamentary cooperation with Egypt, he stated.

Iran can play influential role in guarding revolutions

During the meeting, Egyptian MP Mahmoud Suleiman said that Tehran can have an influential role in guarding the revolutions occurring in the region.

Commenting on Iran’s capability to campaign against the arrogant powers with reliance on the Supreme Leader’s support, Suleiman said that Iran can help guard the revolutions.

Velayati, who is a senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, said that no room has been left for the United States and its allies to flex their muscles in the region, adding that the U.S. is no longer courageous to invade a country in the region.

The Egyptian delegation arrived in Tehran on Thursday to hold talks with a number of Iranian officials on various issues including the latest developments in the world and the region.

Most members of the delegation were prisoners during the rule of President Hosni Mubarak.
