Egyptian student Mariam Moustafa died after being attacked in the British city of Nottingham, where she was studying engineering.

(CNN) Egypt is pressing Britain to act after the death of an 18-year-old Egyptian student, who police say was assaulted in the city of Nottingham.

Mariam Moustafa was assaulted outside a shopping mall at 8 p.m. on February 20 and fell into a coma before dying of her injuries on Wednesday, according to Nottinghamshire Police.

Police said there was no information to suggest the attack was motivated by racial hate, but authorities will "continue to keep an open mind." A 17-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of "assault occasioning grievous bodily harm" and has been released on bail.

Egypt's foreign ministry said it was following the case through the Egyptian Embassy in London and would work with the family's lawyer to make sure the attackers were brought to justice. It also said it would address concerns regarding medical care that Moustafa received after the attack.

Egyptian officials want a parliamentary delegation to visit the UK to investigate the death.

"We are in contact with the Egyptian foreign ministry... to help this delegation to [reach] England as soon as possible," Alaa Abed, the head of the Egyptian parliament's human rights committee, was quoted as saying by state news agency Ahram Online.

Moustafa's death has prompted outrage in Egypt, with high-profile celebrities such as actor Ahmed Elsaka demanding justice.

Bus driver tried to intervene

The Nottingham Post newspaper reported that Moustafa, who was an engineering student in the city, was punched a number of times by a group of women on February 20.

She then got onto a bus outside the shopping center but was followed onto it by the women who threatened and verbally abused her before they got off, the newspaper reported.

Nottingham City Transport praised the bus driver for trying to keep the group of women away from Moustafa after the attack.

"We would also like to publicly recognize our driver, who went upstairs to intervene and acted as a barrier between the attackers and the young lady, after he asked them to leave the bus," it said in a statement.

"The organization added that CCTV footage from the bus had been provided to the police.

'Astonished'

Moustafa's uncle Amr El Hariry said in a video post on his Facebook page that Moustafa had been discharged from the hospital and fell into a coma after she went back to the hospital. He added that authorities had been slow to respond to her case.

"I say that because when the girl was brutally beaten by the group and went to the hospital... the hospital discharged her five hours later and told her that she's fine despite the fact that she told them that she is feeling terrible."

"She went back to the hospital in a terrible condition where she was in a coma for many days. She went through about nine surgeries until she died today."

Speaking to CNN, El Hariry said the family was "astonished" at how badly the case has been handled, and he criticized the actions of the British government, police and the hospital.

He added that the family had provided all the evidence to the police, including video evidence they found online, but the case had failed to progress. "What more do you need?" he asked.

El Hariry confirmed that his niece's body will be repatriated to Egypt, which is where her family want her to be buried.

The British Foreign Office told CNN it is not aware of any contact from Egypt over Moustafa's death.

A spokeswoman for the British Embassy in Cairo said that authorities cannot comment on Moustafa's medical history or treatment because of the UK's privacy laws.

In a statement, the spokeswoman said: "We share the desire to know the full facts as soon as possible. But as this is an ongoing investigation, the authorities cannot comment publicly on the details of the case, because this could prejudice court proceedings and make it more difficult to secure justice for Mariam."

She added that UK authorities must ensure "this disgusting crime does not go unpunished. "
Nottinghamshire Police have asked people not to post comments on social media suggesting that the incident was motivated by hate, calling it an "active ongoing investigation" and saying that "legal proceedings are active."

I asked @Divergent if she heard anything regarding this unfortunate event and she said there was nothing about it in the UK MSM. It's too bad.

This obviously wasn't handled very well, particularly by the hospital if they discharged her and then she ended up in a coma.

Poor thing must've suffered a lot of blows to the head to end up in a coma that kills her.

These types of assaults actually happen a lot more than we think. Just go on YouTube and it's unbelievable how kids go berserk on each other or gang up on one another. Shame. Hopefully her family will get some justice.

One can only imagine the kind of brutal assault that took place.

.
It was in the media yesterday. She was attacked by a bunch of girls inside a shopping centre, she ran away, got on a bus, they followed her onto the bus and continued to beat her until she lost consciousness. Only at that point did someone step in and stop them. It's disgraceful.

Aggressive teen gang?? I have read about happy slapping.

Have you heard about the young Egyptian pharmacist who was murdered in the US.. it was about a month or so ago?

The sad thing is that :
1- No one helped her for a long period of time( where is London Police)
2- after entering the hospital they told her she is fine and told her to go home in spit off she told them she is not ok ( Where is UKs premium medical service)
3- Police took along time to reach the attackers then sent them home( where is CCTV cameras all over in UK)

The whole thing is a group of continuous failure and lack of competence of England public services + the usual racism.

These gang attackers are common and i refuse to call them kids they are bloody terorrists who take lives and i just cant believe hospitals response.

This incident reminds me of another such less gruesome one from america. I feel it cud be a similar bullying.

I did. He was being robbed and they caught all three guys that attacked him and shot him. It was in Maryland.

And here's the thing, admittedly so, it's a despicable act that happened to this girl but we're also more attuned to it as Egyptians because she was a young Egyptian girl, that's just the truth of the matter and there's nothing wrong with that of course. But I do think this kind of thing happens more often than not. This also has become a bigger story for obvious reasons.

Yes i understand but these kind of attacks mean anyone could be vulnerable to such groups whether they were racial attacks or any other reasons , also being an asian its natural to get angry for another asian for me.

Btw i came across this thread and it seems like she was attacked by group of black women.

Seems like a black against non black racial attack to me. Medias silence is another shocker for me.

UK is presently much much busy in standoff with Russia on a attack on spy with nerve agent issue. Their priorities are different.

Honestly, to me, the more disturbing part is not really the attack itself but how the hospital handled the situation. I think they knew she had a blood clot/heart problem and there were some other issues exacerbated by the attack and they didn't give her the medical care that was needed to save her life. That's more shocking to me than the attack to be perfectly honest with you since this kind of behavior is A LOT more prevalent than many think.

Not sure about the UK, but if this was in the US, there's a huge lawsuit in the unfolding.
She made this other video where she complained also about the way the hospital treated her. She mentions in the beginning how she was born with a heart condition. It's heartening how she was pleading for help and even predicted her death in this video. Crazy.

I'm sure getting beat up by 10 other girls didn't help her heart condition. I have A-FIB myself so I know how it sucks to have something that can kill you and I don't need to get beat up by 10 guys my size on top of that.

There's another video of her mom was on Egyptian TV talking about how the same gang of thugs had attacked her several month before.

Man watching the video tore my heart. I cant believe yes i felt it was hospitals negligance towards discharging her so early but ididnt know its so way deep than just that.

I had always heard of pathetic NHS system in uk and their negligence but i really never never knew its so far worst. This girl had i guess italian citizenship then still why she was treated like this?

I have brit relatives (of pak origin) and even tho nhs doesnt command a good repute but my relatives experiences werent really bad. And this girl was saying that queens hospital says our machines tell ur heart is fine so u should leave. But when she went to italy the specialists their suggested her treatment.

So either she was beaten so brutally that her system could not take it regardless of heart condition , or second is that she could have survived the injuries but due to her weak heart she could not fight back and in either cases hospitals negligance worsened the matter.

I dont know why she didnt shift back to italy and stayed and studied there and got treatment alongside.

I myself have suffered from breathlessness condition for no medical reason ( as in doc cant find the reason) and it went away on its own but the way she was breathing in the video is similar to how i used to struggle to breathe normally and the way she said she has locked herself in the house due to fear of breathlessness attacks in public thats exactly what idid too in that very painful period.
