Egypt to Buy Spy Satellite, Two MRTT Aircraft from France

Egypt has signed a contract with France to buy an observation satellite and two multi-role tanker transport (MRTT) aircraft built by Airbus, according to French newspaper La Tribune.

Citing sources, La Tribune said that the spy satellite and the two MRTT planes were part of a bigger deal between Cairo and Paris. It will provide Egypt’s Armed Forces with modern war techniques in a deal that was set to be signed in 2016.

Due to financial issues, Egypt delayed the €600 million contract to 2021, according to Defence World.

Last Tuesday, Egypt’s Ministry of Defence announced that the two sides signed a contract to buy 30 Rafale fighter jets as part of a deal worth €5.4 billion. The deal would be financed through a 10-year loan.

The Dassault Rafale is the most modern aircraft operated by the Egyptian Air Force, used alongside its fleet of modernized American F-16 fighter jets. The Rafale is a semi-stealth multirole fighter designed to conduct close air support, as well as air superiority missions, and is rumoured to have advanced radar-jamming technology.

Egypt recently received four units of a French-made long-range, mobile, 3D air defence radar system called Thales Ground Master 400 (GM400) AESA, that has a maximum range of up to 515 km.

There were talks about other deals for ammunition for 2 billion euros, including 300 Meteor, 300 Scalp (on top of the 150 delivered or being delivered.. only 50 are confirmed delivered but another deal for 100 was signed in 2019).. and 180-400 MICA NG, as well as light and heavy Smart Glider small-diameter bomb.

La Tribune reported in December 2015 that Egyptian military officials were in discussions with the French for the acquisition of a military communications satellite and a high-resolution Earth observation satellite. Reports at the time suggested that the discussions on these satellites ran into technical issues that could not be resolved quickly.

It is likely, however, that the Egyptian military communications satellite will be a Eurostar-3000 system like the two supplied by Airbus and Thales to YahSat in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). YahSat 1A and 1B are both Ka band communications satellites, and are outfitted for use by the UAE Armed Forces as well as for commercial purposes.

According to La Tribune, Egyptian officials balked at the price of the French Earth observation satellite that was on offer, and are said to be considering proposals for cheaper imaging systems from Russian and South Korean companies.

This is the CSO French military Earth observation satellite that Egypt is negotiating for or contracted recently ..it provides extremely high resolution geo information intelligence...

"This launch is only a step, a decisive step. CSO will multiply our surveillance capabilities, allow us images of recognition and identification of a precision never equaled," says Florence Parly, Minister of the Armies.

These work best in constellations.. so one is just a start..Egypt will buy at least two..

Very difficult to match these ones.. maybe in the near future.. and no worries about that..since Egypt, KSA and the UAE always add their own components to their satellites..Egypt already made its own spy satellites in cooperation with Russia..

CSO uses technology derived from the Pléiades satellites. It is much heavier than Pléiades with a mass of 3650 kg. they provide Very High Resolution imagery..around 20 cm to 35 cm from an 480 km orbit or an 800 km orbit..The satellites have the ability to take infrared images..The CSO system is able to produce at least 280 images a day on average.. and there is also a sophisticated ground station that comes with it and sold apart..In the case of Egypt the Satellite cost is $500 million and the ground station is $100 million..( the same cost as France itself! )..Its lifespan is 10 years of operations.

So as you can see, this is a heavy duty satellite.. there are very few nations that can manufacture these types..

South Korea has very limited satellite making capability. It does not make sense to buy anything from them.

Don't trust the French, make your own spy sattelites. They've done it before. They can work with Pakistan too who has its own sattelites.

Egypt is working on satellite cameras, but spy satellite quality is in another league frankly.

Spy satellites don't just use cameras. The modern ones use SAR and other high frequency radars to see through clouds. I don't think any country will be willing to give those to anyone else, though.

No Korea purchases or assembles satellites but does not know to build them. Also, no spy satellite weighs 4tons. These heavy satellites are only for GEO and not LEO. GEO spy satellites are not very effective as the distance is too high and despite the magnification. it is still not good enough

They are GEO or LEO..France is making 3 of them.. google it again and look for the weight. or just read post # 5 in this thread..

Satrec Initiative is developing small or medium satellite systems for Earth observation missions...SI was founded in 1999 by the engineers who developed the first Korean satellite and a series of advanced small satellites.

The South Koreans are too dependent on the US on the technology that they develop. They almost need the USA in everything Security, and developing advanced technology. I have to totally agree with @Smarana Mitra. I would rather prefer the french or russia.

Have the contracts been signed too? I thought they are still in negotiation and will be signed too. Anyways i do hope that they definitely signed it.
