RECORDER REPORT
KARACHI (May 08 2010): Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday said the country's economy is on right track and an improvement on this front is clearly visible. Speaking at the "Brands of the Year Award 2009" ceremony organised by the Brands Award Council of Pakistan at the Governor House here, the Prime Minister said the government has given a right direction to the economy and now it is moving in the right direction.
Acting Sindh Governor Nisar Khoro, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Federal Secretary for Industries Abdul Ghaffar Soomro, Sindh Minister for Industries Rauf Siddiqui, Chairman Brand Award Council Tariq Saeed and Chief Executive Brands Award Council of Pakistan Sheikh Rashid Alam were present on the occasion.
Gilani invited foreign investors to come to Pakistan, which has already liberalised its economy and is blessed with immense untapped potential. "Our private sector has assumed the role of frontline player in the economic field," he said. Strategically positioned at the crossroads of South Asia, Central Asia and West Asia, we aspire to make Pakistan a hub of regional trade and energy transactions, he added.
At 170 million, Pakistan population presents a large market and a sizeable workforce, equipped with the right skills and expertise. The government, he said, assures complete support and co-operation to both the local and foreign investors and welcomes them to look at Pakistan as a preferred investment destination.
He pointed out that a number of recognised international brands are utilising the raw material and skilled manpower of Pakistan to produce world renowned products manufactured and tagged right here in the country. "However we could not produce such a single internationally acclaimed brand of our own," he said, adding that "we have the capability to produce world class brand as we are the one who manufactures football which is being used in the world's popular game for decades. Foreign companies are making our surgical equipment with their brand names all over the world."
He said Pakistan is the fifth largest dairy producer of the world but have no recognised Pakistani brand in this category as well. "It is a challenge to our business community and entrepreneurs to build our own brand without wasting time," he said and added that the government is ready to extend all possible support in this regard.
The Prime Minister said that the Brand of the Year Award is a step in the right direction to break the inertia and a way forward to promote Pakistani brand at national and international level.
He said in the post WTO international business scenario, brand empowerment has become a prerequisite for success of every manufacturer. Brand development involves appropriate utilisation of intangible assets like knowledge, information, creativity and innovation with tangible assets. Besides entrepreneurial gains, creators and inventors of brands also contribute to sustainable economic growth of a country.
He congratulated the Intellectual Property Organisation Pakistan (IPO-Pakistan), Pakistan Standard and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) and the Ministry of Industries for their co-operation in making the event a success. Director General IPO, Khalid Mehmood Bukhari in his address of welcome said that the event was organised to promote brand culture in the country.
