Economy needs reliable supply of energy: Gilani
(6 hours ago) Today

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Sunday that in the next 15 years, there are indications that the difference between the demand and supply of energy in Pakistan will be doubled.

He said development of local energy sources, including hydel projects and the Thar coal-fields, also remains a high priority for this government.

The prime minister asked the Pakistan Energy Conference to suggest ways to the government to tackle the crisis.

Why don't they look for solar/wind power to generate cheap electricity, Pakistan have huge land with no population in some areas of Sind & ofcourse Balochistan.

.
Solar energy is by far more expensive than traditional sources. Wind energy is unstable and may have huge impacts to the grid thus requires other plants to work with them in a smart grid.

Be ready for 14-hour power cuts, warns KESC
Updated at: 1135 PST, Friday, April 08, 2011
Karachi: The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has warned that loadshedding duration across the city would be increased to 14 hours a day when gas supply from the Sui Southern Gas Company decreases by up to 80 Million Metric Cubic Feet Daily (MMCFD) due to the Annual Turn-Around (ATA) of Bhit Gas Field that starts from April 11.

Best Idea would be investment in Wind power

Wind farms could be quite successful near coastal areas or even offshore
You can also ask for technology from chinise who are third largest producer of wind power after USA and Germany

Even India is looking to double the share of wind power in electricity generation from 8% OF total supply to 16 % of total supply by 2020

60% of wind turbines used by India is Provided by Suzlon Energy which is the largest wind turbine company in India , which provides turbine with generation capacity of 600 KW to 3 MW

Both wind and Solar power need other plants to work with them in a smart grid.

With new technology, the cost of solar energy has drastically reduced. Plus, it requires much less periodic maintenance

Nuclear energy & itshazards have been exposed by japanese earthquake! if Japan cannot contain it with such high level technological know how as well as non corrupt leadership! then it really shows south asia is not ready for nuclear energy just yet!!!!

However, as for Solar energy & Wind Mills we can surely do that in balochistan and sindh coastal areas! that is a smarter way! and we should carry forward and make the Kalabagh Dam!

as a side note ,, ppl use wood or electrical, gas stoves to cook food and this need can be addressed with solar cookers which points the solar energy onto one point using reflecting surface to concentrate itsheating power,, thease are fairly common in other countries such as china and india, but in pakistan they are pretty unique things,, yesterday i searched for them in pindi and found ony one shop selling them ,, that was of horrible quality,, it was made from small two inches squares of pieces mirror ,, and was approx 3 meters wide and one meter tall,, it costed 11000 pkrs alng withg equally shobby stand,, some of the mirror pieces were fallen from the dish,, my mobilre battery was dead so couldnt get its snaps,, it appered very crude,,
as most of the pakistan's population is rural and they dont have natural gas or proper electricicity so they use wood and gung to cook,, if this solar is introduced with incentives by government it would be a good enerhgy saver,,,,

also solar panels were extremely expensive .. they were selling qcell german made solar cells with 12volts 1 amp and 100 watt chargers for 62000 pkrs,,,,

so for the government to close the demand and supply gap it should give some serious head to these areas,,,
fr example the solar cooker oof much better quality costs 35-50 us $ from chaina,, so government either allow its import with no duty or make arrangements for local productions in partnership with private investors.,,,
