ISLAMABAD: The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Saturday approved the 13 kilometere long Metro Bus Service project between Rawalpindi and Islamabad, just days before the Supreme Court is due to hear about the environmental costs of the project.
In a meeting chaired by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar at the Prime Minister office on Saturday, the Rs23.839 billion project was cleared.
The project now needs to secure clearance of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) by the environmental protection agency.
Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani last week took notice of the ‘flawed’ route alignment of Islamabad section of the project in a bid to avert possible threat to the environment.
The project’s cost will be shared by the federal and Punjab governments. The federal government will contribute Rs13.419 billion whereas the Punjab government will chip in Rs10.419 billion.
The service aims to provide residents of the twin cities a high quality mass transit option. As part of the project, the Peshawar Morr Interchange will be constructed. The interchange is expected to redress the long standing complaint of congestion at this inter section.
The project envisages construction of over 13 km long dedicated signal free corridor of 9.60 to 10.10 meters width at normal section and from 19.00 to 21.10 meters width at Metro Bus System (MBS) stations and tranches in Islamabad Territory. The proposed corridor will accommodate articulated buses running simultaneously in both directions.
MBS project will start from IJ Principal Road at Faizabad where Rawalpindi portion terminates, and will traverse through IJ Principal Road, 9th Avenue, Jinnah Avenue and finally terminate at the Pakistan Secretariat, Islamabad. The Islamabad portion includes Peshawar Morr Interchange as per CDA design and a provision for 14 bus stations with allied facilities.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, Minister of State for Information Technology Anusha Rehman, Federal Secretaries and senior officials from central and provincial governments.

Metro bus track to have Train compatibility

Rawalpindi—The Punjab Government on Friday formaly announced to perform groundbreaking of the multi-billion Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Project on March 23, ending all speculations about fate of the long-awaited scheme. Commissioner Rawalpindi Zahid Saeed, briefing the media here, said the 22.5 kilometer track would have train compatibility to meet future needs of mass transit.

“If the number of passengers increase manifold in next five to ten years, the track will be compatible enough to switch over to mass transit train,” said Zahid Saeed, who is also the Project Director.

The project, being executed at a cost of Rs 43 billion, would be completed in 10 months to ensure speedy and decent transport service for the residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.


He said construction companies would work round-the-clock to meet deadline, while a lane on each side of busy Murree Road would be kept open for traffic during the period.

He apprised that 8.6 kilometer elevated track, having 10 stops, would be constructed from Flashman’s Chowk, Saddar upto Faizabad.

“The track will pass over Mareer railway bridge and Committee Chowk underpass, while it would go along the 6th Road and Chandni Chowk flyovers,” he said.

The Metro Bus would make stopovers at 10 points including Flashman’s, Mareer, Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk, Waris Khan, Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Rehmanabad, 6th Road, Shamsabad and Faizabad. Approximately, he said, 14 kilometer track would be laid in the limits of the federal capital, where bus terminals would be set up at every one kilometer distance as per international standards.

“The terminals will have all facilities like escalators, lifts for disabled and senior citizens, generators and public toilets and tight security all along the bus track,” he maintained. Replying to a question, the Commissioner said, the Project would have no negative impact on environment in Rawalpindi and Master Plan of the federal capital.

Initially, he said, 60 buses would ply on the route with two minutes interval to facilitate around 150,000 commuters daily, between the twin cities.

To another question, he said, 28 kanal of land would be acquired for setting up bus terminals in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, of which 20 kanals and 16 marlas were needed in the garrison city. “Land acquisition process is in progress,” he said.
