KARACHI: Dr Ishratul Ebad has completed 12 years as Sindh governor on Friday and gained a ranking among the top three serving the longest tenure on the same post in the world.
Dr Ishratul Ebad has been on the post since December 27, 2002, when he took charge as 30th governor of the province. However, the first and second rankings belonged to two governors of the United States.
Ebad also holds the record of youngest governor while he is also the first man to hold the post longer than any other governor in Pakistan from all four provinces. He had also been given the top civil award of Pakistan ‘Nishan-e-Imtiaz’ over his long services to the people. He is the first governor having his own social media account from which he interacts with people directly and solves their problems as well.
The governor resigned on June 27, 2011, but his resignation was not accepted by the President of Pakistan. He resumed his official governorship duties from July 19, 2011. He is also one of the senior leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). He also holds the nationality of the United Kinddom.
The Sindh governor also played an important role after the horrific Peshawar attack to keep the society engaged. He played a pivotal role in defusing tension and violence in the province by holding political talks with members of other political parties. He also played an instrumental role in getting the 22 hostages released from the captivity of Somalian pirates through joint efforts with Ansar Burney who leads a human rights organisation.
