At least 60 people have been killed in an earthquake in central Italy, Italian media say.

The magnitude 6.2 quake hit at 03:36 (01:36 GMT), 100km (65 miles) north-east of Rome, not far from Perugia.

Many of the dead were in Accumoli, close to the epicentre, and a short distance away in Amatrice, where three-quarters of houses were destroyed.

Many people are still believed buried under the rubble, and the death toll is expected to rise.

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi paid tribute to the volunteers and civil defence officials who had rushed to the scene in the middle of the night and used their bare hands to dig for survivors,

My prayers and thoughts for the people of Accumoli.

What a tragedy,my prayers/condoleances to Italy and their people, the affected families.
If Italy needs,we are ready to give any needed assitance.
@MarkusS I hope you are safe.

Italian homes in general are not designed for earth quake resistance , therefore if a larger quake ever hits the casualties would no doubt be high

The streets were quite pristine condition , as residents had kept these assets in good shape (Most Italians are really good at maintaining property)

However , the homes are quite old not able to stand even a 6 range quake

Rest in peace

I didn't knew that there could be any major quake in Europe
Since it doesn't lie on a major fault

Didn't know 6.2 can cause such devastation too.

What? 6.2 earthquake killed 60 people!!!

Just couple of hours ago Sylhet was hit by 6.8 nothing happened.

RIP to the dead. The death toll is, unfortunately, much higher.

The earthquake hit a small town with houses being hundreds of years old and,I'm afraid, unsuported for earthquakes. There are also Romanians feared amongst the dead.

UPDATE: Death toll rises to 80.1 Romanian citizen confirmed dead, 9 missing.

RIP to the dead and a speedy recovery to the injured.

The earthquake was swallow at a depth of around 4km so even though the EQ was relatively of small magnitude, its effect was devastating.

Thanks for the kind words...

I donated blood today. And well its really horrible. Unfortunatelly italy often suffers from great earthquakes. We had a large one in 2009 and this one ...

They say death toll could peak 200. It was in an area that is not densely populated. Lucca is far north and we did not feel anything but it was felt eve in Rome.

I hope this doesn´t trigger worse. We have several massive vocanos in italy. The most famous is Vesuvius and such earthquakes can trigger an eruption.

I dont know i think our infrastructure is to blame. Much of our cities is very old architecture. Its in great shape but can hardly withstand such earthquakes. We have no big in Tuscany usually but small ones.

. . . .
RIP to the deceased, i feel sympathy as someone whose hometown got largely destroyed by an earthquake.
