MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Air Force (PAF)’s modernization program is on a roll following President Duterte’s approval to purchase multi-role fighter jets.

Officials based in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) headquarters at Camp Aguinaldo and Villamor Air Base revealed the President has approved the defense acquisition project for two squadrons of brand-new Multi-Role Fighters (MRF) under the Horizon 2 modernization program of the AFP.

It also includes the purchase of another brand-new missile frigate for the Philippine Navy (PN).

“The next process of the approved MRF acquisition project now is to finalize its technical side for deliberation and approval by senior defense and military leaders,” a Camp Aguinaldo official said.

For now, military planners have yet to come up with the exact amount or specific budget of the MRFs acquisition project for the Air Force, the official said.

The official added the government has allotted P289 billion to bankroll the AFP’s Horizon 2 Modernization Program.

There was also no mention of what multi-role aircraft would be acquired but advanced information obtained said the PAF is heavily inclined to acquire European-made MRFs.

“All now depends how fast our senior leadership can act on this MRF project as approved by the President. But it could be implemented immediately once there’s a go signal from our senior leaders,” the official said.

What is the budget and what are the possible jets PAF is interested in?

Almost every tender is looking at the same aircraft.
Rafale, Eurofighter, Gripen, F/A-18 and F-16.
F-15 is a Dark Horse, but I doubt F-35 after Dutertes behaviour.

With an inherent conflict with China over SCS, the chinese are probably out of the picture.
Russian MiG-35, Su-34 and Su-35 if Duterte really want to snub Trump, but I doubt it.

Surely Duturte will opt for a Chinese aircraft.

I don't think US will sell its jets to a country where allegedly severe Human Rights violation occur. PAF can go for Russian and even Chinese have a possibility. 4++ jets such as Rafale are out of picture.

how about JF-17 ? comparable with low price..

FC-1 having Chinese involvement has low chances. Chinese aircrafts do not have a lot of favouritism due to SCS Issue. PAF will most likely order additional FA-50. The only diversion I can see from this is that they go for Russian jets. USA being moral police will not sell its jets atleast until Duterte is in power.

How many countries looking for fighters put up the JF-17 on the list?

As for low price, the JF-17 was designed for only a few thousand flight hours.
That information was removed from the JF-17 website, when it became an issue.
If you have to replace and or refurbish the aircraft a couple of times to reach 8,000
flight hours, the aircraft is maybe not that cheap.

Hi, my name is Mr. Saudi Arabia. Nice to meet you.
Regarding KSA, the case is different. Just as When Pakistan was fighting Soviets covertly and also working on nuclear program, it was still given military and financial support. But when the soviets left, we had sanctions all over us.

Nevertheless, there is still a chance that PH and US seal fighter jets deal especially if SCS gets hot.

Nigeria n myanmar already did. I can foresee thailand, cambodia, indonesia n african countries coming along the way.

Price tag is a major consideration, n these countries are poor- they cant afford marked-up european planes.

Only dumb, western-lobbied, oil-rich middle eastern countries and india can buy them. This is why many european plants have difficulty finding customers outside the middle east(that even china is now encroaching).

Though i know the jf-17 is the 1 in topic, drones r the prime testimonial to this. Siince chinese drones have already penetrated the drone market in the middle east(i would go as far as to use the word 'conquer')- it is only imperative that this will cover the manned combat jet market.

Obviously european/us defense mics are feeling the heat. The only way is to reduce prices to withstand the chinese onslaught.

But can the average european plant worker accept a 5dollar/hr pay instead of a 10dollar/hr one? Your guess is good as mine.

Same goes for the C919.

1 step at a time.

Nigeria paid like $25M for three aircraft, anyone can accept a gift.
That leaves Myanmar.
The rest is just fantasies.

China can probably give him the J-20.

Why don't you give the F-22?

China has lots of other fighters too.

LOL You can't find one customer for the Gripen. Like the man said, overpriced Western fighters are only for a select few.
