Rustom TD is tech demonstrator for Rustom-H and UCAV programmes.
Rustom TD is a Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV.

New Delhi, Oct.16 (ANI): "RUSTOM", the medium altitude long endurance Unmanned Arial Vehicle (UAV) being developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment, a premier Defence Research and Development Organisation lab specializing in UAVs and flight control systems, was successfully flown in its maiden flight here on Saturday.

The aircraft was flown exactly as planned, up to a height of 3000 feet and remained airborne for 30 minutes and completed all mission requirements.

It taxied, took off and landed (among the most challenging maneuvers for a UAV), using a runway at an air field owned by Taneja Aerospace, Bangalore, like a normal aircraft with the ground based pilot in full control monitoring every maneuver of the aircraft and auto mode remaining on.

Rustom, with a designed endurance of 12-15 hour, 25000 ft. altitude and 75 kg payload, is the forerunner to the more advanced Rustom H and unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV).

The data link for this aircraft has been developed by DEAL, another DRDO laboratory and the airframe has been built by Zephyr Aerospace, Coimbatore.

The subsequent flights will test and demonstrate these capabilities such as way point navigation, altitude and endurance parameters, the systems for which have been already incorporated in the aircraft.

Dr. Prahlada, Distinguished Scientist and Chief Controller R and D (Aeronautics and Services Interaction) who was present there briefed the mission details.

Dr. G. Elangovan, distinguished Scientist and Chief Controller Research and Development (R and M), P.S. Krishnan, distinguished Scientist and Director Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), G. Natarajan, Program Director, G.

Sreenivasamurthy, Project Director, and Ajoy Raman, Chairman FRR, witnessed the flight. (ANI)

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle test flown

Bangalore, Oct 16 (PTI) Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a city based DRDO Laboratory, has developed and successfully test flown an unmanned aerial vehicle called ''Rustom 1'' today from Taneja Aerospace and Aviation (TAAL) airfield located at Hosur.

The aircraft took off even in inclement weather conditions for the first flight, flew for 12 minutes and landed successfully meeting all its objectives, a release said.

Being the first full flight of the aircraft, it was under the command of Lt Col VS Thapa of Indian army, an experienced External Pilot for UAVs.

He controlled it without any difficulty throughout its flight which included pilot assisted takeoff, flight in air and a copy book style landing, the release said.

Many auto features like GPS controlled Way Point Navigation, Get U Home were included in its first flight and they would be exercised in the subsequent flights. The UAV had an endurance of 12 to 15 hours and could carry payloads upto 75 Kg and had an altitude ceiling of 25000 feet, it said.

Such flights of UAVs remove the risk to human pilots when they have to fly them in hazardous zones. The data link system for this UAV was designed and developed by another DRDO lab called Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory, situated in Dehradun.

Its airframe was made by Coimbatore based private company Zephyr and most of its onboard systems were also manufactured by private industries in the country.

This development was the fore runner to the medium altitude long endurance UAV project Rustom H to be taken up by the lab shortly. This also paves way for the development of unmanned combat aerial vehicles in the country. This UAV could be used by all the three armed services, in said.

Any idea why the Persian name Rustom and not something in Sanskrit?

Any idea why the Persian name Rustom and not something in Sanskrit?

It was named after renowned DRDO scientist late Prof. Rustom B. Damania who led the team of engineers that developed the Light Canard Research Aircraft at the National Aeronautics Laboratory in India in the 1980s. He was a Parsi Zarathushti.

hey i have heard that we are also working on a project for UCAV...........any updates about that.....

I Must Say Its Beautiful ......

Guys, I don't think this is Batman. Real Batman has been kidnapped by Joker who is now posting under his name!:woot:

Fun apart, there is a great deal of similarity between the indian and the chinese designs, especially those huge canards! Wings are similar too.

What is the name of the chinese bird, what role has been envisaged for it? ( something lethal for sure as it shows two missiles in the model)

Dude Rustom TD is derived from NAL's LCRA which was developed in the 80s.
