Union Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju yesterday inaugurated a Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machine centre at the premises of the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL). The facility has been built at a cost of Rs 16 Crores. NSTL is one of the premier research laboratories in India along with Naval Physical Oceanographic Laboratory (NOPL) and Naval Manufacturing Research Laboratory. The mentioned three labs of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), countries premier defence research organisation, are engaged in Naval research.

The new CNC centre will enable NSTL to manufacture equipment on its own and reduce the external dependence. “This facility will provide NSTL the ability to effectively deliver innovative and high quality products on time to meet various project requirements,” Pallam Raju said.

The CNC machine bay has been designed to accommodate about 12 machines in the first phase with provision for future expansion. In addition, other facilities like CAD / CAM modelling, tooling and inspection facilities are also planted to be integrated.
