China has begun construction of a logistics base in Djibouti, its first military facility overseas.

The facility will be used primarily for military rest and resupply in carrying out naval escort, peacekeeping and humanitarian duties, Reuters reported, citing Chinese defense ministry spokesman Wu Qian.

Last year, China said it was in talks to build what it describes as naval “support facilities” in the Horn of Africa nation, which has fewer than a million people but is striving to become an international shipping hub.

Djibouti, strategically located at the southern entrance to the Red Sea on the route to the Suez Canal, is already home to US and French bases, while other navies often use its port.

“Currently, initial construction on the relevant facilities has already started and China has already dispatched some personnel to launch relevant work,” Wu told reporters at a regular monthly press briefing.

He did not elaborate.

China had conducted anti-piracy operations in the region in recent years and is seeking to expand its capacity to respond to growing threats to its interests abroad.

President Xi Jinping is reforming the military and investing in submarines and aircraft carriers, as China’s navy becomes more assertive in its territorial disputes in the South China Sea and East China Sea.

China is also expanding its peacekeeping role, with Xi pledging in September to contribute 8,000 troops for a United Nations stand-by force that could provide logistical and operational experience the military would need to operate farther abroad.

While China has been getting more involved diplomatically in trouble spots such as the Middle East, it is adamant that it does not interfere in the affairs of other countries, and is the only permanent member of the UN Security Council which has not taken military action in Syria.

Feb 25 China has begun construction of a logistics base in Djibouti, the Ministry of Defence said on Thursday, what the Horn of African country's government calls a military facility that will be China's first overseas.

Last year, China said it was in talks to build what it describes as naval "support facilities" in the Horn of Africa nation, which has fewer than a million people but is striving to become an international shipping hub.

Djibouti, strategically located at the southern entrance to the Red Sea on the route to the Suez Canal, is already home to U.S. and French bases, while other navies often use its port.

China and Djibouti have reached consensus on the facility, which will be used primarily for military rest and resupply in carrying out naval escort, peacekeeping and humanitarian duties, Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said.

I suppose the PLAN will maintain a permanently deployed destroyer squadron here. I suppose anywhere between 1-2 squadrons. Would love to see more of those Jiangkai Class IIs!

So, even thousands of miles away from home, we found a base with Japan our next door neighbor. So nice. Looks like there are higher forces that attract the two sides closer even away from home.

Yes precisely.

Tho China will substantially increase their base , I believe it will be a naval- air base . But capacity will be large; enough to handle a brigade force for stationing.

Ours can hold up to 2 regiments . I believe China will be larger than ours.

And I may add, the US is expected to leave Djibouti.

The US signed a long term agreement (20 years) with Djibouti on Camp Lemonier starting 2014. The US is closing all other facilities in order to move to the long term tenant base which expanded to 800 acre (from original 88 acre pre-2001)

The New base (which was upgraded in 2001) upgrade in 2015 would see US troop rotation peak at 7000 personnel current deployment included AF Security Squadron, Army National Guard BCT and 1000 + special force operator. As well as Fighter Wing, Logistic Wing, Drone Operation would be operate out of Camp Lemonier.

Sure, that's all fine and dandy. The point we would like to stress is that the JSDF welcomes, with full arms, the arrival of China in this corridor. More partners, the better.
