Jatiya Oikya Front leader Dr Kamal Hossain’s motorcade has been attacked near the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur.

At least 12 leaders and activists from the Oikya Front, including Syed Abu Bakar Siddique Saju, a paddy sheaf candidate from Dhaka-14 seat, and the driver of ASM Abdur Rab’s car, have been injured in the attacks, according to alliance leaders.

About seven cars, including those of Oikya Front allies ASM Abdur Rab and Jaglul Haider Afrik, were vandalised in the attacks on Friday.

The attacks came after Dr Kamal Hossain and other alliance leaders had paid tribute to the martyred intellectuals and got into their cars, Latiful Bari Hamim, media coordinator for the Gono Forum, told bdnews24.com.

Reza Kibria from Gono Forum, BNP leader Abdus Salam and Gonoshyasthya Kendra Trustee Zafrullah Chowdhury were present on the scene.

“A group of miscreants from the Chhatra League and Jubo League attacked us with sticks and rods,” said Hamim.

He alleged that the attackers hit Dr Kamal’s car with sticks and vandalised the car of Abdur Rab. “His driver has been seriously injured and taken to the hospital.”

Those miscreants hit the Oikya Front leaders and activists indiscriminately, he said adding the leaders and activists began to scatter. At one point, the BNP leaders and activists started to gather chanting slogans, Hamim said.

Dr Kamal called an emergency press briefing on the issue for a 3pm start on Friday.

The Oikya Front leaders led by Dr Kamal went to the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at 9.15am and paid their homage.

ANGERED BY MEDIA QUESTIONS

Dr Kamal lost his temper as reporters asked him questions about Jamaat-e-Islami.

“We came here to pay our tribute to the martyrs. How much have you been paid to ask such questions? This is Shaheed Minar. The martyrs of 1971 are laid here. You should think about them.”

“What is the name of the channel you work for? Just keep your mouth shut, shut up!” said Kamal when a reporter asked him about the alliance’s position on Jamaat, the political party that lost its registration.

“We are here to pay tribute to the martyred intellectuals. We must uphold our independence and make it meaningful for everyone, as millions of martyrs have sacrificed their lives for it,” Dr Kamal said.

“Independence is not for those who want to make personal benefits out of it. Everyone in the country has an equal right to it,” he said.

“We’re working to create a beautiful society free of repression. We’ll free the country from the clutches of those who work against our dreams.”

“They will have to give in to our countrymen, no matter how powerful they are.

Jatiya Oikyafront leader Dr Kamal Hossain’s motorcade was allegedly attacked at the Martyred Intellectuals Mausoleum in Mirpur area of Dhaka this morning.

The motorcade came under the attack when Dr Kamal was coming out of the Mausoleum after paying tributes to the martyred intellectuals around 9:45am, Latiful Bari Hamim, a staff of the Oikyafront’s media wing, confirmed told The Daily Star.

Driver of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President ASM Abdur Rob, who was with Dr Kamal, was injured while the attackers, chanting slogan “Joy Bangla,” vandalised several vehicles of the motorcade, said Hamim.

However, both Dr Kamal and Rob were unhurt, he further said.

Selimuzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Darussalam Police Station, said police rushed to the spot sensing untoward situation but did not find anyone in the area.

Kamal Hossain accompanied by some top leaders including Gonoshasthaya Kendra trusty Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, BNP leader Abdus Salam, Reza Kibria, son of slain former Awami League Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria and others went to the Martyred Intellectuals Mausoleum on the occasion of the Martyred Intellectuals Day today.

The Jatiya Oikyafront will hold a press conference clearing its stance over the attack this afternoon, he added.

Dr Kamal Hossain was visibly angry when he was asked about his position on the Jamaat-e-Islami, an Islamist party that openly opposed Bangladesh’s struggle for freedom from Pakistan.

Kamal, 81, drove to Mirpur on Friday morning to pay tribute to the martyred intellectuals of 1971 and faced a barrage of questions from the media.

“We are going to liberate the country from those who are working against the dream of liberation -- from lust and greed,” Kamal told reporters on the scene. “They will be defeated by the people of the country, even if they are strong.”

Reporters then drew his attention to the Jamaat-e-Islami that found its way into the election, blessed by the Kamal-led alliance, Jatiya Oikya Front.

Kamal said he would not say anything about the issue at the Shaheed Minar, a memorial to the intellectuals.

The reporters did not relent. One of them asked why Jamaat-e-Islami that lost its registration is competing in the election in association with the Jatiya Oikya Front, a new opposition alliance he leads.

Dr Kamal then flew into rage and was shaking with anger. “The question doesn’t arise at all. You’re arguing with useless talk. How much have you been paid to ask such questions? Who paid you?” said Kamal.

Two of the leaders, beside him, tried to calm down Kamal. But another journalist went on to ask more questions.

Kamal then blurted out: “Think of the martyrs. Think of the martyrs. Just keep your mouth shut, shut up!”

Jatiya Oikyafront leader Dr Kamal Hossain's motorcade came under attack near the Martyred Intellectuals' Memorial in the capital's Mirpur yesterday.

At least 25 people were injured in the attack carried out allegedly by ruling party men around 9:45am when the eminent jurist was returning home after paying tribute to the martyred intellectuals, alleged leaders of the opposition alliance.

Seven to eight cars were vandalised, they said.

Dr Kamal, also president of the Gonoforum, was unhurt.

Armed with rods and sticks, some supporters of Aslamul Haque, Awami League candidate for Dhaka-14 constituency, attacked Dr Kamal's car after he boarded it at the memorial's main gate on his way home, said Latiful Bari Hamim, media wing member of the Oikyafront.

The attackers vandalised vehicles carrying Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President ASM Abdur Rob, Gonoforum leader Jaglul Haider Afrik, and Oikyafront's candidate for Dhaka-14 Abu Bakar Siddique Saju, he mentioned.

They also beat up BNP and Oikyafront leaders and activists who tried to resist them. At least 25 people, including Saju and Rob's driver, were injured. The driver was taken to a local hospital, Latiful added.

Contacted, Aslamul refuted the allegation and said the claim was made as part of a conspiracy against him.

Earlier around 9:30am, about 50 alliance leaders, including Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, BNP chairperson's adviser Abdus Salam, Gonoforum leaders Afrik and Reza Kibria paid homage to the martyred intellectuals.

As Dr Kamal got into his car after talking to journalists at the memorial, around 40 to 50 people, who had gathered there since morning, hurled brick chips at the cars carrying him and other Oikyafront leaders, and chased those. The vehicles then sped up, according to witnesses.

The attackers beat up around 10 people. A photojournalist was assaulted for taking pictures, they said.

A number of locals told this newspaper that most of the attackers were activists of Swechchasebak League and Chhatra League units in the area.

Several shopkeepers there said they didn't see any policemen during the incident.

Selimuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Darussalam Police Station, said they rushed to the spot sensing troubles but did not find any of the attackers.

Asked about the attack, Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said he was unaware of the incident.

"We have not yet received any written complaint in this regard," he told this newspaper in the evening.

Speaking at a press conference at Oikyafront's Paltan office in the afternoon, Dr Kamal condemned the incident and said the attackers showed disrespect to the martyrs by launching an attack near the memorial.

"We went there to pay tribute to the martyred intellectuals. We are not much bothered about what happened to us ... They showed disrespect to the martyrs. It cannot be accepted."

He alleged that hired goons were used to launch the attack on them.

"How much money did you get to carry out the attack? It cannot be a patriot's act,” the noted jurist said, adding that he would give them money for not committing such an act.

"Today is martyred intellectuals day, but they forgot it."

He said they would write to the inspector general of police (IGP) in this regard.

"I request you [the IGP] to listen to us with due importance. You will be given all information ... Please conduct a probe by trusted officials. We will help you with the investigation."

Dr Kamal said he wants details of all the arrests of alliance leaders and activists.

He further said the country must be freed from the clutches of plunderers and those who are working against the spirit of the Liberation War.

The Oikyafront leader also called upon the Election Commission to create a level playing field for holding the December 30 polls in a free, fair and inclusive manner.

BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan alleged that ruling party men carried out the attack.

The election commissioners should resign from the constitutional body, shouldering the responsibility for the incident.

JSD President ASM Abdur Rob said the attack would not have happened if military personnel had been deployed.

Blasting the EC for its “partisan role”, Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna alleged that the commission is favouring the ruling party.

I am not surprised by this heinous act from those bastards . This nation is not civilized and not going to be civilized very soon.
No, there is a possibility of becoming civilized very soon if only people like @Homo Sapiens and @UKBengali come to the forefront. I am sure they are not already involved in the BAL politics of vandalism? They are in the PDF, though!!

Basically not only AL, but BNP too you know bhai .
Just the difference is BNP is out of power.
But will our good folks ever come to politics? Or if they come will we vote them?? I don't think so. Still let's have hope , but I think it's not going to happen soon .
We pretend to be the victims of those politicians, but we always vote for them .
So we are actually accomplices, not victims, because we choose those bastards over good peoples .

When we will boycott those low life politicians and their gundas, and can choose our leaders outside of two main parties , then only we only can be called civilized peoples.

Although @Homo Sapiens will not like it, as you said before the reality is we are not a civilized nation. Go to a civilized country like England or Japan, you will not feel that today is an election day and people are casting their votes. In the case of BD it is soooooo different. In other countries, the candidates ask for votes to serve the country. Here in BD people ask for votes for getting POWER.

AL is panicking. Alarming statements from their leaders like 100,000 AL people would be massacred just in the first day if Oikya Front comes to power are just making their situation worse.

It's a dirty trick of AL. They know very well that it's not going to happen. 1 lakh massacred would be another hoax. Corpse business is not new in the history of sub continent.
But Bangladesh is actually champion in this case.
Rumors spread so fast in the country, and peoples spread rumors by competition.
Do you remember 5 may 2013 action against Hefazat-e-Islam ? Surely few (more or less 5/6 people? ) peoples might have died that day, but even the rumour was, govt killed 20/25 thousands of peoples in few hours!!!
What a disgusting method of spreading lies .

So if oikkofront win and 2/3 AL folks died , then they also will claim 2/3 thousand dead.

Most of these people would switch sides to whichever party wins, so there wouldn't be any such thing as massacres. Some murders may take place but that would be out of personal grudge of individuals.
