Civilian governments also got billions in aid. This is not a definitive factor. When Musharraf was in charge there was peace and stability. Terrorists were rounded up and hung. After Zardari took over, he released many terrorist and eliminated the death penalty to appease foreign interests. Many of his ministers were working with foreign intelligence agencies. Terrorism exploded and Pakistan's economy suffered massively. Your arguments are for people that don't know the true history. The civilian governments (PPP in particular) have been disastrous for Pakistan's economy. That was because they got billions of $$$. It wasnt because of any economic policy.

Pakistan's best economic performance has been under military rule. Pakistan was looked at as an example for other Asian countries when Ayub Khan was in power in the 1960s. S Korea would send ministers to Pakistan to study our economy during this time. Things under Zia were also good in 80's. Musharraf was a bit of a laggard economically but he was dealing with sanctions. The bulk of the flaws in our economy was due to PPP. PML was better but they would pursue unsustainable growth strategies. There is no debate for people that know the history.
The Zardari regime got the biggest US aid package of any Pakistani government....more then 3x what Musharraf got and far more then anything seen during the cold war. I know its hard for Americans and left wing Pakistani's to stomach...but civilians governments in Pakistan.....especially the PPP...have been horrendous from an economic development prospective. That is the facts...not much to debate.Periods of military rule have been linked to the influx of huge amounts of foreign money especially American
1958-1971 Cold war aid
1977-1988 Afghan War 1979-1990
1999-2009 War on Terror 2001-present
I can argue the Pakistani Army has given up direct rule when confronted with possibility of reduced foreign aid. It happened in 1988 and 2009 (approximate years)

Is there an offical source citing $33 billion???There was no peace in Pakistan during Musharrafs time. From 2001-2007 there were regular blasts. The guy got $33 billion in aid from US government. Military has no business interfering in civilian matters they should worry about military affairs which are shoddily run in itself.
Above all the guy was corrupt to the core and looted billions of $$.

Look at US and international foreign aid from 2001 to 2008 (Mushy was President)

The aid spigot tapers off after 2011

US Aid peaked in 2009 (Zardari regime)....Pakistan's growth rate plummeted to zero. US Aid ended in 2011...Pakistan's growth rate shot up in the following years. USA aid does not correlate to Pakistan's economic growth and is not meant to help Pakistan's people. The purpose of USA aid is to buy off our senior politicians like Mr 10% that skim off large amounts of this aid, to get what is wants geo-politically. Most Americans don't want to hear the reality...but that's what it is.
Its a short sighted approach by the USA in my opinion. Same approach is being used in Kabul with similar disastrous results.
Your changing the subject. USA aid does not correlate to economic growth in Pakistan. Many Americans assume that cutting off aid would make Pakistan grovel to the US......and that didn't occur. Few in America understand that this aid money is more to buy off elites in Pakistan....not to help the Pakistani economy. After 2011 Pakistan had credit based and CPEC spending driven growth. That ended a couple of years ago
