What an absolutely strange world we live in. Now, it is the conservative, hardline republicans who are willing to work the "Axis of Evil" to end war?

Of course, let's wait and see. We can't trust what a politician says, and have to wait and see for ourselves the actions that they do.

President-elect Donald Trump has reaffirmed his campaign trail position that assisting the Syrian government in fighting Isis should be the US’ main objective in Syria, despite appeals from rebels for continued help in their fight against President Bashar al-Assad.

“I’ve had an opposite view of many people regarding Syria. My attitude was you’re fighting Syria, Syria is fighting Isis, and you have to get rid of Isis,” he said in a wide-ranging interview with the Wall Street Journal on Friday.

Mr Trump has stated that while he “did not like [Mr Assad] at all”, shoring up his regime is the best way to stem the extremism that has flourished in the chaos of the civil war and threatens the US.

He has also been emphatic about mending ties with Russia, Syria’s long-standing ally and military backer in the conflict.

“Russia is now totally aligned with Syria, and now you have Iran, which is becoming powerful, because of us, is aligned with Syria… Now we’re backing rebels against Syria, and we have no idea who those people are,” he told the Journal. If the US attacks Mr Assad, “We end up fighting Russia,” he added.

Mr Trump’s victory in the US election was welcomed by Damascus, Moscow, and Tehran.

Aides to Mr Assad were cautiously optimistic in interviews on Thursday, saying that the president was “ready” to cooperate with Mr Trump going forward.

To date the US has tacitly supported rebels in the war both logistically and financially along with Turkey and Gulf allies Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The long-standing US position has been that Mr Assad must be removed from power and democratic elections take place to end Syria’s civil war, now in its sixth year.

Mr Assad's strategy - including air strikes targeting civilian infrastructure, siege tactics and alleged use of chemical weapons - have been responsible for far more civilian deaths in the conflict than rebel groups or Isis militants, analysts and monitors say.

Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton had proposed a no-fly-zone over Syria, a position Syrian rebels had been hopeful could stem the aerial attacks that have turned the tide of the war in Mr Assad’s favour since Russia began lending the Syrian government military support in September 2015.

After Mr Trump’s shock election victory this week, the main Syrian opposition group the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) reached out to Mr Trump’s staff asking him to protect civilians.

President Anas Al-Abdah said the SNC had sent Mr Trump its congratulations and was in touch about a “comprehensive new approach” to Syria.

The US must “establish peace in our region and to find fair and swift solutions for the threat of terrorism... especially the state terrorism practiced by the Syrian regime against the Syrian people,” Riad Hijab, head of the opposition High Negotiations Committee, said in a statement on Wednesday.

Other rebels on the ground were less enthusiastic, predicting more bloodshed no matter what Mr Trump’s policy ultimately ends up being on the war which has killed more than 400,000 people to date and driven half the Syrian population from their homes.

“The Americans were never honest with us. They left us in a quagmire that drowned the Syrians... Everyone is trading with our blood and suffering,” said Abu Hamed, head of the military council of rebel group Liwa al Haq Brigade, speaking from Hama.

America creates terrorists, abandons them and then blames others for their existence.

All the indications are that Trump will join the Russians to defeat ISIS. He is against the departure of ASSAD.

.
He will be chilling in the hot seat with his hot wife and CIA and the shadow government will be calling the shots.

I agree the US has invested so much inside Syria. They're not gonna just accept it and let him run the show.

Sure. These nice guys, such loving humans who kill people like mice, have nothing criminal in them right? Its just America of course. How convenient to blame America for everything. If someone came and gave me a gun, I won't kill anyone, no matter how much I am paid for it.

Then you see these barbaric human garbage that kills thousands (including Americans) and have no mercy for human life. And there culture, insane views of life and craziness have nothing to do with those inhumane crimes they commit?

Before the Gulf war 1 there was no such thing as these crazies... crazies aren't born they are made... the number manufacturer of these crazies has been the Saudi Khawarji factory Riyadh Inc. & not too far behind Tehran Inc. And of course CIA egging stuff on.

Saudi regieme is an abomination... a country that doesn't allow women to drive... that alone should disqualify it from the group of nations... yet each and every American (and others including Pakistani etc.) Bend over backward to literally kiss their "kings" .

Zionism and Oil two curses on this planet. Neither one has been utilized in a civilized manner.

What are you, stupid or something?

The US murdered 3 million civilians in Vietnam and they brag about it to this day in their movies and documentaries.

Anyway, since you sound like a typical brain dead Indian, let Hillary Clinton clarify it for you.

You simply don't understand Trump's logic. For him there is no difference between FSA and DAESH and Iran. Ending the support for FSA does not mean he's gonna support you. If he doesn't back the rebels against Assad and Daesh, he's gonna need a new enemy for the sake of his domestic policy. And that is why he will again make a bogeyman out of Iran. If he does this, he will gain the support of the influential Jewish community and the conservative elites. In his strange worldview he probably hates Iran as much as Daesh.

Calling me an Indian doesn't help the post, nor it makes me one. I guess its a part of the Eastern Conspiracy theories. Either I am a Pakistani or an Indian, all because I didn't say something someone expected me to. Makes no difference or impact on the post.

We were talking about terrorists. You brought in a war. How about we go back to the discussion on the terrorist and open up a different thread to discuss the wars? Wars have collateral damage. How many people have been killed inside FATA operations? Thousands!! But at the end of the day, it was a military operation, semi war like. So it makes sense that it had so many civilians killed sadly.

So back to the topic, my question is, why would you discount the religious craziness that shapes behaviors, culture issues, the Jarga system (just studied it in detail last semester) and the likes, but you'd just blame on the US?

Seriously. I am expecting a mature answer. So please, help us understand. Why blame the easy escape-goat and consider no other factors that make up a terrorist mind?

Without the "Raw Material" you couldn't get the end product. So in this case, you should first be pretty pissed at your own religious identity leaders spreading Wahabi Islam worldwide out of KSA? The US or anyone else would have to come much, much later in the time of their need.

You can't build the perfect storm and be ready to use it, and the person that pushed you into the field gets the blame for the entire game. Let's be fair to the situation and blame where it really needs to go.

Outside of having a holly site for Muslims, what has the KSA contributed to the world or for its citizens? The US alone, gives more aid to all the countries than the entire UN does. And yes, in the hour of our need, we use our relationships, like everyone else does. But take a look at the US contributions towards the humanity. Which in contrast are much, much larger than the small stuff you are referring to. Thanks

The thing is there really aren't a central religious leader in Islam. Hasn't been one for centuries. It's mostly fragmented followers of different sects.

In the context of central and south Asia... It was during the cold war and the fight against the Soviets that most of the wahaabi schools of thought was encouraged. They weren't "extremists" yet as we think of them today. Most were idealists and useful idiots for the USA and for the Pakistani elites useful cash cows.

Unfortunately, they grew into the Taliban - all Qaeeda - Isis etc. Snake we see today. Their roots are from the Saudi wahaabi school... but they have morphed into something much more sinister. The majority of muslims were too naive to recognize these demons for what they actually were.. Because most muslims had romantic notions of jihaad. Romantic notion such as fight against oppression, social justice, fight for the weak etc. Little did they majority realize that the wahaabi form of jihad and shariah was quite demonic.

Moving forward to today... the Pakistani people by and large... and other mainstream muslims have now woken up to this wahaabi khawarji threat... and i believe the Pak army has been at the forefront fighting them for the past 10 years. We woke up. Now it's the wahabbis who run and hide like cocroaches... hence in their desperation they attack "soft targets" ... like they shrine in Baluchistan today. Pathetic cowards!

Unfortunately Trump will never comprehend the complexities of the world ... and especially of this region....

I agree that Pakistan has moved on from this b.s. drama and now has great prospects of growth and prosperity. On Trump, I think he's a smart dude, he gets it. But at the same time, a POTUS has seasoned adviser who can bring him up to speed to. Thanks
