Chinese automakers' targeted approach pays off with rising

Chinese brands saw a sudden surge in sales in the first two months of 2015 in the passenger vehicle, or PV, segment, which IHS Automotive said included sedans, sport utility vehicles, or SUVs, and multi-purpose vehicles, or MPVs only.

Sales of local Chinese brands rose by 41.71 percent in the PV segment in the first two months of the year to 972,833 units. The top brand was Changan, followed by Haval from Great Wall Motors.

Sales of Changan, the in-house brand at Changan Auto, soared 102.69 percent year-on-year, in the first two months. Haval, Great Wall's SUV brand, witnessed an even higher growth rate of 131.50 percent year-on-year.

The models that predominantly pushed up sales of domestic players in the first couple of months of the year were SUVs.

Some Chinese consumers consider SUVs to be family vehicles and rate them as safe and spacious; therefore, the SUV segment continues to see double-digit growth in China.

Sales of SUVs produced by local brands in China rose 52.17 percent year-on-year to 424,770 units in the year-to-date period in February.

Great Wall's Haval brand was the top-volume seller in the SUV segment with a 56.8 percent year-on-year hike to 99,102 units in the first two months of 2015.

Haval has more SUVs on offer this year. The Hover H1, H2 and H9 are all new SUV models boosting sales for the brand.

Changan followed as second-best seller, with the CS35 and the new CS75 SUV models boosting sales. The brand sold 61,318 SUVs in the first two months of the year, up 71.2 percent year-on-year.

The third-highest SUV-selling local brand was Jianghuai from automaker Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Company, or JAC. The brand added the Refine S3 to the Refine S5 SUV, which helped SUV sales grow by 78.44 percent year-on-year to 40,231 units in the two-month period.

Beijing Auto, the in-house brand of Beijing Automotive Industry Group Co, or BAIC, witnessed an SUV sales jump of 96.63 percent year-on-year in the two-month period, with 36,397 units of its eight SUVs sold.

BYD's SUV sales rose 10.49 percent in the January-February period, with 22,479 units sold following the addition of the S7 SUV to the existing S6.

In the first two months of 2015, FAW's SUV sales were up 31.92 percent year-on-year, Zotye's were up 81.43 percent, Haima's were up 61.87 percent, Dongfeng's rose 99.38 percent and Geely's increased 51.58 percent. These brands all added SUVs to boost sales.

Outlook and implications

In 2014, final sales data showed that most Chinese brands suffered a difficult year.

The situation today is a stark contrast as local Chinese brands are suddenly witnessing sales growth rates often in double digits.

The reason is that local brands raised their in-house technical standards, partnered with international suppliers and built better-quality models. More importantly, they have begun to target the highgrowth segment of SUVs.

Brands that reported low single-digit sales increases at the end of 2014 are now seeing double-digit growth, while those with negative growth are reporting positive numbers.

The focus of these Chinese automakers has shifted from producing many different models to targeting sales of models in growth segments and catering to specific target consumer groups.

The sheer volume increase in sales of local-brand SUVs shows that 2015 is the beginning of a targeting exercise from local brands, bringing better-quality products tailored for specific segments of the Chinese consumer market.

In the first two months of 2014, Chinese brands sold 203,136 SUVs. This rose by 52.18 percent to 424,770 units in the first two months of 2015.

The question is whether this growth of Chinese SUV sales will continue, and whether overall Chinese brands will continue to see growth in their local domestic market?

In the January-February period, Chinese Original Equipment Manufacturers, or OEMs, managed to increase their market share in PV sales, excluding imports and exports, to 32 percent from 26 percent in the same period last year. Meanwhile, Japanese OEMs seemed to lose momentum again in PV sales as their market share decreased to 15 percent from 17 percent in January-February 2014.

The strong rebound in domestic OEMs' performance is attributable, in particular, to the positive reception of their SUV products, especially those of Great Wall, Changan and JAC.

With more SUV products from Chinese OEMs to be launched this year, we expect domestic OEMs to at least increase their market share from 27 percent in 2014 to 28.8 percent in 2015.

International brands witnessed a rapid slowdown in sales growth rates of locally produced PVs in China, with a number of brands in negative territory.

Volkswagen's sales were up 4.1 percent year-on-year during the first two months this year with 543,896 locally produced PVs sold in the two-month period.

Hyundai's sales were down 6.3 percent year-on-year, Buick's were down 6.1 percent year-on-year, Ford's were up 16.8 percent year-on-year, Chevrolet's were down 1.2 percent year-on-year, Toyota's down 11.4 percent year-on-year, Kia's down 2.7 percent year-on-year, Honda's down 2.3 percent year-on-year and Nissan's down 13.6 percent year-on-year.

This is in stark contrast to the sudden jump in growth rates of local brands in China.

A Look At Haval’s Shanghai Motor Show Stand
Tuesday, April 21, 2015

Haval, Great Wall Motors’ SUV and crossover division, had a packed stand at this year’s edition of the Shanghai motor show. They featured two studies called Concept R and Concept B, as well as new or revamped production vehicles too.
H8.

The concepts were named based on their paint themes (red and blue), but are said to preview versions of the same production model. One is the more sensible variant, while the other looks sportier – with that gaping grille, we could say they’re going for the F-Sport approach here…

Haval also sells an even larger vehicle, the very Toyota Land Cruiser-like H9.

Is it due to cheap oil price that Chinese people shed no more of SUV?

Is it due to cheap oil price that Chinese people shed no more of SUV?

It seems like there is an overall interest. I myself am an SUV fan because of its flexibility and appearance.

Domestic producers stepped up the effort and they seem to have been awarded by the consumer: When there is viable domestic option, people will opt for their national manufacturers.

Hopefully the quality drive will further expand from the SUV segment to middle and high-end passenger cars and China's manufacturers will end up with a healthy 75% market share at home.

What Do You Think About Geely's Emgrand Concept?
Tuesday, April 21, 2015

Designed and developed by a team led by the established Volvo designer Peter Horbury, the Geely Emgrand Concept previews a sporty sedan - purportedly to go against the BMW 3-Series in China.

The concept itself is surprisingly good-looking and well-proportioned, with a clean, uncluttered shape. Chinese cars will eventually catch up in terms of design and engineering with the rest of the world and this is one of the first, early signs hands down.

The company says that the design was inspired by Shanghai’s skyscrapers and the West Lake Bridge in Geely’s hometown of Hangzhou but we still can see some similarities with other cars and concepts. Nevertheless this looks good to these eyes.

Rumours suggest that if the Emgrand concept ever reaches production, it would use a shared platform with Volvo and probably even reach Europe. It’s no secret after all that Geely wants to be taken seriously as car manufacturer on a global scale.

BYD Song SUV debuts on the Shanghai Auto Show in China
PUBLISHED ON APRIL 21, 2015 BY W.E. NING

This is the all-new BYD Song SUV, unveiled on the Shanghai Auto Show in China. It is officially still a concept but it is 99% production ready. The real thing will be launched on the Chinese car market in Q4. The BYD Song is the hybrid variant of the upcoming BYD S3 SUV, it will be launched on the Chinese car market in the third quarter of the year.

A stylish but busy dash, in typical BYD style. The main instrument panel is partly digital partly analoque. Large screen in the center console. Wood panels a nice touch, rather special for BYD, as they normally go for alu of ‘carbon’ stuff. Colors are a bit of a mess again, as usual, with that wood battling orange door panels and seats. Round air vents completely mismatching with the rest of the interior.

Sadly and badly, BYD still has not announced anything on power output, likely because they are still working on it, but the company confirmed what we already knew: a plug-in hybrid drive-train consisting of a turbocharged 1.5 liter petrol engine mated to two electric motors, one on each axle, creating a four-wheel drive car. Transmission is a six-speed DCT. BYD says that the acceleration from 0 to 100 takes only 4.9 seconds. In electric mode the Song has a range of 70 kilometer.

Size: 4565/1830/1720, wheelbase is 2660.

BYD is not joining the latest trend in downsizing the lights, they are huge as usual. Roof rails in matte chrome look very usable.

A rather models grille for a BYD. Not too much chrome this time. Black ‘X’ a nice new touch.

Two exhaust pipes flanking the skid pad. All together a good looking car with impressive tech, BYD showing once more they are on the right track to automotive stardom, and higher sales.

Sales of new-energy vehicles are going through the roof, with an increase of 200% over 2014 quite achievable

Charging stations are also mushrooming。

I suppose this is too one of the “New Normals” :enjoy:

Honestly, I never get why people want to drive SUV, if I were to drive SUV, I would have driven a truck.

SUV is not exactly sporty (Despite being called Sport Utilities Vehicle), they are quite slow, and hard to accelerate and the brakes are usually retarded due too the sheer weight of the article....

I simply don't get why people like SUV...

For me, you either go full on Jeep or go get a truck....

.
It can go 0-60 in 3.1 seconds?

Model S | Tesla Motors

Or are you comparing the BYD S9 HEV to the low end engine Tesla?

So what?Tesla uses a much larger battery pack。

How is India doing in the EV、HEV、PHEV markets?

Does India make any so-called new-energy autos?

Does India make any li-ion power batteries?

Does India even own any minerals that are essential to the making of batteries?

Lithium?Cobalt?Graphite?Let alone graphene?:D

Engine power have nothing to do with battery........

The reason why Tesla have a large battery (85Kw/h) so that they can run longer. Compare the range of BYD S9 (70Km fully charged) to Tesla (~300KM fully charged), that's where the battery is considered

Of course it has everything to do with battery power。

For a fixed size or weight of a battery, higher power density gets you higher acceleration while higher energy density gets higher mileage。

When I say larger battery, I mean battery both physically larger(for higher range)and with higher power density.

Anyway, BYD's S9 is a SUV and as such should be compared to Tesla's yet-to-be-released Model X.

PS Tesla S P85, 0-100km 5.6s; Tesla S P85D,0-96km 3.1s;BYD S9 0-100km 3.9s。

Tesla S P85 costs a lot more than BYD S9。

..........It's no use if you have a high performance battery if you do not have a powerful engine, and being electric engine, it cannot be the same as petrol car engine as you do not have piston and cylinder to control the gas flow. While you can have a more powerful torque and horse power by literally putting in premium fuel in a petrol engine car, it won't happen this way with an electric car, it is now all about Engine, how "effectively" to translate the battery efficiency into power configuration.

Hence, how fast a car can go does not related to the battery, but the engine alone.
