  • The Doklam saga will encourage countries like Vietnam, Mongolia, Singapore and Japan that have been pushing back at China
  • Under Xi, China’s historic revisionism has become more pronounced as it expects Asian nations to accept its military and economic dominance
NEW DELHI: India's success in holding out in Doklam against Chinese threats is likely to be seen as proof that China's attempts to bully smaller neighbours into submission can be countered by determined diplomacy and alliances backed by military resolve.

The Army's swift response to China's road-building on Doklam near the Sikkim-Tibet-Bhutan trijunction took China by surprise and they never quite regained the initiative as India dug in and decided to out-wait an adversary whose perceived invincibility has suddenly taken a knock.

As with the surgical strikes, there was an element of risk in PM Modi's decision to confront China.

Despite Beijing's war talk, the odds seemed to favour a peaceful resolution given the real costs to both sides.

The possibility of armed conflict was, however, not ruled out and the Indian leadership went by the military assessment that despite China's better border infrastructure, it would not find India a pushover. "They would have got in here and there (along the border), we would have done the same. There would be casualties on both sides," said a well-placed source.

The Doklam saga will encourage countries like Vietnam, Mongolia, Singapore and Japan that have been pushing back at China, and cause others like Philippines, who looked as it they might cave in, to reconsider. Japan's support to India's argument that China acted unilaterally to change the status quo angered Beijing no end, but it underlined that efforts to paint India as "intruder" were not working.

Under Xi Jinping, China's historic revisionism has become more pronounced as it expects Asian nations to accept its military and economic dominance and accede to its island grabbing in the South China Sea. Backed by its economic and military clout, China has sought to settle disputes on its terms. But the bare knuckled policies are facing a backlash.

Lee Kuan Yew school of public policy's dean and ex-diplomat Kishore Mahbubani's suggestion that Singapore should hold its words on issues concerning China produced a strong denunciation. Singapore, it was said, had a strong interest in ensuring navigation in South China Seas is not restricted. Mongolia displayed the temerity of hosting the Dalai Lama.

India create examples for the world to follow. Now China will at back-foot or cautious to intrude in any of its neighbors territory. So what if China has more military power, when everyone will get united, it will not have any other option to surrender. Dictating terms on India is a dream when Modi is there.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...her-small-neighbours/articleshow/60267739.cms

Though it sought to mend fences, it has only shown a rebellious streak, refusing to endorse China's position that the 1962 India war was Jawaharlal Nehru's fault. Vietnam has been discomfited by US President Trump scrapping the trans-Pacific partnership but is not ready to tolerate even an unauthorised Chinese oil rig in its waters.

Even as it offers billions of dollars in aid and big opportunities for foreign students at its top universities, China's bid to use raw power and intimidation has run into unanticipated resistance. Its sponsorship of rogue nations like North Korea and the threat of military means to redraw maps has created an arc of distrust from Japan to Africa. Even far off Botswana said it is not a colony when China asked it to cancel Dalai Lama's visit. On the other hand, India showed it can stand by allies like Bhutan and is a benign and trustworthy partner.

Doklam sent the message to our neighbor Bhutan loud and clear: Hindus will abandon their 'treaty allies'. They will unilaterally withdraw and retreat while China continues stationing troops and conducting patrols :)

Hindus have opted to save their own (dark) skins first, leaving the Bhutanese to pick up the pieces of their mess alone.

Yes, the message is that India will quit on you without a proper resolution. China will militarize the area and prevent Indian troops from re entering before reconstruction of the road the next time.

BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese border troops are continuing their patrolling and defending the Dong Lang (Doklam) area, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Tuesday.

"We will make an overall assessment of the weather conditions and all related factors, and according to the actual circumstances complete construction plans for the Dong Lang (Doklam) area," spokesperson Hua Chunying told a daily news briefing.

On June 18, over 270 armed Indian troops with two bulldozers crossed the boundary into Dong Lang (Doklam), Chinese sovereign territory, to obstruct infrastructure construction.

China Monday confirmed that India had withdrawn personnel and equipment from Dong Lang (Doklam) after a military stand-off lasting more than two months.

Dong Lang (Doklam), which borders India's Sikkim state to the west and the Kingdom of Bhutan to the south, is part of Chinese territory and has been under Chinese rule for a very long time.

Hua said for a long period of time, China has constructed infrastructure facilities including roads to meet the needs of soldiers and civilians, and improve their living conditions.

1) China did not withdraw
2) China will continue construction.

"Details remain sketchy of how the worst border dispute between the two countries in more than three decades was defused after both sides announced on Monday they had agreed to an “expeditious disengagement” of troops from a remote Himalayan plateau.

...........Although the Chinese foreign ministry sounded triumphant announcing that the Indian troops had withdrawn, experts say it was Beijing who had compromised by seemingly accepting New Delhi’s demand that it stop road construction in the disputed area where China, India and Bhutan meet.

“Despite Beijing’s deliberate ambiguity, China has apparently made substantial concessions in order to end the dispute,” Yue said.

....“India has got exactly what it has wanted. It was a humiliating defeat for China to cave in to pressure from India despite all the tough talk,” Yue said. "

Comment of the year from another website by American guy:

It would have been worse for India than 1962. China would have considered it as a live fire exercise to test all their new impressive armaments. Then there would be no doubt in all of Asia that the dominance of the Middle Kingdom has returned.

It appears some media are contradicting one and another. Some say China lost while others are convinced it was India who turned out to be the loser. China's foreign ministry literally said road constructions will resume once weather conditions permits it as winter is approaching and the PLA troops still remain in the area patrolling. We are talking about official press release here okay? This isn't the usual Indian propaganda media mouth piece that knows no shame penning down face saving articles, lies, exaggerations, bragging that sort of nonsense we are all accustomed by now. BUT if Indians honestly believe the road isn't coming guess we have to wait till next year until we have visual proof. Seriously they even believe it was the Indian soldier who kicked the PLA to the ground eating dust. :omghaha:

All of those countries that oppose China were hoping and PRAYING that India would not unilaterally withdraw from the area, and hand over Bhutan's territory to China without a fight.

Guess what though? :P

Yeah and it's time for China to construct the road which was the reason for the stand off and humiliate India and prove to rest who are doubting and saying China to be a paper tiger.

.
I pity India.. They entered a foreign land to stop road construction, but they can't do anything about the most publicized highway joining several countries passing through the land which they claim is theirs.. i.e. Gilgit Baltistan..

:lol::lol::lol:

To construct? It's already 30-40% constructed in Doklam, reaching Doka La, 100 meters from your border. Don't forget the existing lower grade footpaths we made over the years extending all over Doklam. Do you even know what happened? We were upgrading those footpaths to grade 40 roads. Grade 40 meant 40 tonnes load, our light tanks are 35 tonnes, you get the picture? Btw, how many meters of roads were destroyed? NONE.

China just stated they will continue to construct the roads, my bet after Modi's visit and winter, most likely after February. The issue will die down, Indian media will give less attention and Modi won't be attacked. We need to ensure Modi saves face and remain an Indian hero for the domestic audience.

Very true. Look like Vietnam is not buying Brahmos after such a display of cowardice.

They could just buy it straight from the Russians why do you need to go through a middleman.

Indian withdrawal essentially signaled to Nepal & Bhutan weak Indian resolve. The dynamics have changed. I bet Bhutan will open up to China after this. There are already rumors Bhutan may give up Doklam in exchange for disputed areas in the north and demarcate the borders with China ending all disputes.
