Does Sri Lanka need a Bridge link between India and Sri Lanka? NO! But India does

"The influx of persons from India would encourage certain diseases to reach chronic endemic proportions from a medical point of view. To consider one frightening example highlighted by a WHO expert in Malaria. Sri Lanka is near free of Malaria and the medical teams that worked over the decades unrecognised and in silence to eradicate the malarial virus should be congratulated and thanked. India is totally different, it is a malarial hot bed that has reached pandemic proportions.

In fact, every Indian arriving at Sri Lankan ports of entry should be checked for Malaria, to ensure that the re-infecting process is kept under control. If our doors are opened as intended in the CEPA to labour, services, their families and dependents, Malaria of a more virulent Indian strain will raise its head in Sri Lanka and the dedicated good work of the past decades will be lost for ever. Please think again, do we want to re-infect this island that is now free of the Malaria epidemic with a more virulent strain and sacrifice the lives of our future generations?"

The fact is we are now a polio-free country. Our Government would have thought about that too.
What if links with Sri Lanka bring in polio back ?
There are pros and cons in international politics.

If the vector has been dealt with (as seen by Sri Lanka's Malaria numbers), there will be no huge change in any malaria introduction from foreigners (and Sri Lankans returning from abroad).

You still have carefully ignored responding to: "23 cases in 2008 and 51 cases in 2011 out of 1 million + visitors."

They make a small minority even when you compare with SL domestic cases of 684 in 2010.

Till you respond to those figures and have read http://globalhealthsciences.ucsf.ed.../mei-eliminating-malaria-sri-lanka-lowres.pdf and understood that Malaria is not a contagious virus that you can control by human-human interaction...I consider this as unsubstatiated fear mongering by you and the author (who has literally stated that Malaria is a virus quite ignorantly).

As for the superbugs, 58,000 newborns dieing out of 25 million live births each year is like 0.2%. Even when you look at Infant mortality rate as the base figure (40 per 1000 births i.e 1 million deaths)....it still comes to a figure of about 6%.

Tons of countries have problem with superbugs. They have been reporting this fear for years now.

Bridge will go on ahead, fear mongers and haters will continue as usual. World moves on. Pro India Ranil and Sirisena will rule SL for many years to come and Rajapaksa family will be consumed by corruption cases....and his Chinese backed white elephant projects will be reviewed and Indian security concerns taken care of. All in all good times ahead for India - SL relationship. As for terrorist infiltration, only one country in South Asia has that as its "pure" doctrine.

How silly of me to think that hordes of disease ridden Indians would pose a health risk to Sri Lanka and its people.

Enjoy Ranil and Sirisena :p:

How silly of me to expect you to understand that hordes of disease ridden Indians pose a health risk to Sri Lanka and its people.

Pakistan will support Sri Lanka on this resolution.
says pakistani diplomat...:pakistan::pakistan::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

This is real India mentality so Sri Lankans must be careful. Indians are like snakes who can never be your friends whether you feed them all your life....they are poisonous.

and you are centipede? ???

:blah::blah::blah:

"Hordes of disease ridden Indians"....do you even listen to yourself LOL.

Good thing that Sinhalese bigots like you are in the minority.

You can abuse India and Indians all you want with fear-mongering, outlandish exaggeration and ignorance.....it ain't going to change the factual reality.

.
Says the Tamil bigot who thinks Sri Lankans want a bridge with Tamil Nadu.

What for? So more illiterate twats can enter the island?

Your govt is pushing for it. You are welcome to overthrow them and bring in Rajagoonda again.

Are there even any protests in SL over a bridge to India? Or just a few defence forum trolls venting their anger and claiming they speak for the majority? :p:

.
Still waiting on the mass protests from Sri Lankan public over a bridge to India.

I mean if there is such a severe discord between govt policy and public opinion, surely there would be mass scale protests happening right now in downtown Colombo? So show me some pictures.....prove Sri Lankans don't want the bridge

Your regular tactics of attempting to ignite a flame war wont work.:jester:

Sri Lanka is not India or Tamil Nadu where mass protests happen at the drop of a hat and people burn effigies and set themselves on fire. You can continue to believe that the majority of Sri Lankans desperately want a bridge to Tamil Nadu if you like. Afterall if believing in the efficacy of hanging from hooks, marrying dogs and temples to film stars is no problem, this would be no issue at all..

Just a march down the road with some placards....maybe a few dozen people...and for a couple hours.

Surely such a big issue like you are making this out to be needs at least some token visible support from even some Sinhalese chauvinists in Colombo...I mean come on....disease ridden hordes of Indians will be unleashed soon into innocent pure Sri Lanka! Its a matter of national survival it sounds like.....are Sri Lankans so placid they don't care about something of this phenomenal magnitude?

“India should press for international probe”

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Tirumavalavan demanded that India should push for an independent international probe into the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Addressing a protest meeting organised by the party here on Monday, Mr. Tirumavalavan said that 1.5 lakh Tamils were massacred in the island nation. “It was important that the accused in the killing of Tamils should be booked and punished by the International Court,” he said.

Stating that the Tamil diaspora was pressing for this demand, Mr. Tirumavalvan pointed to the resolution passed to this effect by the Tamil Nadu Assembly. He wanted the Centre to take a cue from the Assembly resolution and push for an international probe.

Even five years after the war was over, Tamils in Sri Lanka had not got protection. Their farms and houses were taken over by the Singhalese military and Tamils were made to suffer, he said.

He wondered why the US, China and the United Nations remained mute spectators when innocent people were massacred in Sri Lanka.

OK so no one in Sri Lanka is going to do anything to stop a bridge to India.

Maybe you should go out there and try get some support so some one will listen and take an interest?

Or you can keep mumbling and grumbling here as long as you want and then keep accumulating the rage as the years go by and India and SL get closer and closer and the bridge is finally opened.

I bet thats really healthy for you o_O

Chennai based Young Tamil Nadu Movement protests against Lankan PM's India visit

Members of the Young Tamil Nadu Movement (YTNM) staged a protest here on Wednesday against Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's visit to India.

Supporters of the Chennai-based group showed banners and raised slogans against Wickremesinghe.

One of the protestors demanded that the Indian Government should snap all economic, political and cultural ties with Sri Lanka.

"We strongly condemn the reception given to Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. For the past six years after the Mullivaikal massacre, all Tamils across the world have been demanding all states to boycott Sri Lankain all terms. The Indian Government should end its economic, political and cultural ties with them," he said.

"The Tamil Nadu Assembly has also passed a resolution demanding the Indian Government to cut its economic ties with Sri Lanka. The Indian Government is ignoring our demands for the last six years," he added.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Assembly has adopted a resolution seeking international probe against the Sri Lankan Government on alleged war crimes against the Tamils.

Wickremesinghe arrived in the national capital earlier on Monday on a three-day bilateral visit.

This is Wickremesinghe's first official international visit after assuming the Prime Minister's office last month.

Talks with Sri Lanka on $5.19 billion road project to begin by October - The Economic Times

NEW DELHI: Keen on fostering ties with neighbours, India is set to engage in high-level talks with Sri Lanka by October for an ambitious $5.19 billion road project to connect both the nations through a sea-bridge and an under water tunnel.

Secretary-level talks are proposed as per convenience of Sri Lanka for a pre-feasibility study and finance by ADB, sources said.

Lets see what october brings. Maybe common day Sri Lankans will start protesting then?;)

India is in no rush. We simply want to integrate more countries in the region economically for mutual benefit.

Everything is proceeding at Sri Lanka's "convenience" and these are early days still.

Yet Sinhalese chauvinists like you and the original article author are already kicking up such a major arrogant fuss.

Lets wait and see what Sri Lankan parliament does, how much opposition there is to it, and how many common day Sri Lankans raise their voices to stop it (and if they are in the majority like you claim). So far we can hear a needle drop though, so I seriously doubt any serious resistance will be offered by the traditional MR fancrowd (which couldn't even muster enough support in his 2nd attempt....FAIL!)...and if there is....it will be token resistance that can be ignored.

If you argue from this facet, I can see your point. Instead you are content with throwing around monikers like "disease ridden Indian hordes" and resort to classical flame-baiting. How sad and desperate of you!

Tamil Nadu seeks probe against Sri Lanka for alleged war crimes as Lankan PM Ranil Wickremesinghe visits India to strengthen ties

6611.jpg

Chennai, Sept 16: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday adopted a resolution seeking international probe against Sri Lanka government for alleged war crimes committed in 2009 in Northern Sri Lanka. Interestingly, all this is happening while Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is on a three-day visit to India to deepen strategic cooperation for “peace and stability” in the region.

Referring to the report released by the US, which had earlier favoured international probe into the alleged human rights violations and war crimes during the peak of hostilities in Sri Lanka in 2009, the state government led by Jayalalithaa alleged that the US had now altered its stand and is in favour of internal probe. The ruling AIADMK government passed which moved the resolution, was passed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously and was supported even by the opposition parties.
