hi every one,
i want to raise a point that, our navy doesnt hav any aircraft carrier and it is not much needed.but our navy shoud hav a separate airbase, attacking aircrafts(their own sqads) and helis etc.so it do not be a burden on PAF to look after the oceans too.
PN can use a few sqads of few aircrafts for striking and attacking on enemy ships, subs, fighters etc.
PN can use JF-17,MIRAGEs,JH-7 OR J-11.
and it shoud be written on those aircrafts PAKISTAN NAVY,like it is written on fokker,p3,atlanta,sea-king etc.
what u people say
this  or this :enjoy:

your right Pak navy should have its own air arm with teeth. I would go a step further and provide it with a small aircraft carrier with capacity for say one squadron (25 aircraft) and some helicoptors for force projection. The problem with land bases is that the aircraft are limited to these bases an air craft carrier provides some flexibility.

.
i think there will be no need that until and unless we have mirageIII(ROSE I) in our paf for naval support

. .
A Small Aircraft carrier carrying 25 planes WILL COST upwards of $2 billion. And then you need at least 4 -6 modern Frigates to escort this carrier. ie seperate from the rest of your Navy..

Why buy a Small carrier Wen your ENEMY will have 2 meduim carriers carrying 35 planes each.. ???

. .
I am not too savvy on military matters, but a small country like Pakistan should be weary of having duplicated roles. Let us discuss what the implication of a naval Air arm means. It is one thing to fly P3s or Atlantique , but to have jet separate from Airforce means 2 different set ups with duplicated roles and more money. Who trains the fighters and who services them. Will it mean different aircrafts and what infra structure would have to be erected for it. Is it not better to have the country divided into 3 joint commands with each command having assets at their disposal. In the latter case only PAFs resources would get divided into regional commands and everyone will get air cover. We might need to increase the number of aircrafts by 50 or so and have a couple of dedicated squadrons of fighters adapted for naval attack.
In my view the off shoot of this policy would be economy, better coordination and less infighting as things get organized on a regional basis.
Also as an off shoot of this you can combine command and staff college keeping each arm together will create better understanding of each other problems and better coordination would yield better results.
What do you guys think?

The only reason peopler talk about a Seperate Air Arm is because posters here realise in 4 years time both the Gorskhov Carrier at 40k tonnes and the Indian Navy own built ADS at 40k tonnes will be inducted. They will carry upto 50 MIG29K fighters and small nos of TEJAS or sea harriers.

Pak Navy is outnumbered 3-1 in ship nos and 6 -1 in tonnage. The feeling is Air power may be needed to Give Pak Navy a chance against a increasingly powerful Indian Navy.

Pakistan cant afford carriers so land based JF17/J10 maybe the answer.

One thing for certain you cannot go against MIG29K with just rose upg mirages.

2 to 3 sqds of JF17 with 2 refullers and 1 dedicated Awacs wud be good answer. But total cost for all this $1 billion ++

JF17 and AWACS are on the cards already but for refuellers not sure about that.

We have talked lot about PAF doctrine but how about Naval doctrine especially when you do 70% of your trade through sea routes. This needs to be protected under any circumstances but how its a big question mark against already strong Indian Navy.:coffee:

.
We have ordered refuelers too Skywalker but all that stuff is for Air Force not for navy.

.
We have talked about this before several times! PAF is using Mirage 's to play the anti ship role and in the near future jf-17's will handle the rest ! more or less as i stated before i would like to see PN build up her surface fleet follwed by subs! naval arm could use fighter jets but i don't see it happening it will be handled by PAF !

.
JF-17 just doesn't have the legs, the range required, look at what kind of payload it can carry with two tanks and refueling, it may keep the Indian navy away from the coast but I don't know if will be effective in relieving pressure on trade routes.

JF-17 is an interim answer, either way, positioning the Pakistan Navy against the Indian, as these composed today, would take big ones.

do you really think that tejas will start flying by then???

i do not think the topic was wort a new thread, i do respect the chracter of the poster9who started the thread) and am well aware about the importance of the issue but dont you guys think it have already been discussed adn that to in detail!
anyway i dont think PN will be ever going to have an independent fightr aircraft squadron! some people here were mentioning the AC of indain navy. let us be clear that we may not find our surace involved in an offensive action, there role will be to keep our sea lines open protect the shores, for this they wont be going much too far away from our land bases that we will need ACs. our aircraft flying from bases near the coast line will sever us to give an air cover, they will surely be helped out by mid air refuelers!
i have also read that these refuelers wont be for navy but remember that the fighters wont either be for the navy. they all assets will belong to PAF and will be there to servr as naval arm of PAF, just like we are operating the mirage III at the present time!
now comming toward the point of whether PN need as aircraft squadron! for me the idea is not a bad one but it involves lot of money and training, infact a new system will have to be set up and doing so for just a squadron or two wont be a wise choice. we have also haered from sir Murda Khan that there are some problems when PAF operates for PN and he said that PN never seem to show there real intentions and this craets lot of trouble for both parties. for me the nest solution to this problemis to set up a squadron under the supervision of PAF, it msut be using PAF bases, radars and maintainacne and all other necessary stuff, then the pilots and the human staff involved must be sent to navy on deputation and they will be commanded by the navy. i gues this will sort out lot of stuuf as it wont require any extra funds and will put the force under naval control to avoid any misunderstandings!
i will bw really gratefull for you response to this comment, looking forward to know what Sir. MuradK and others thinnk of this!

regards!

The only point of our Naval Arm should be to stop the blockade of our ports in Karachi and Gwadar and keep the sea lanes open.

India has a strong Navy but we need strong defensive capabilities to punish it should it try to blockade Pakistan.

I would say 48 Fighters armed with Exocet, Harpoon and Sunburn Missiles out to be enough to keep the sea lanes open and avoid the blockade.

Those 48 could be the US F-18 or the British Harriers or Tornadoes.

Since the Saudis are getting 72 Eurofighters, we should ask them to sell those Tornadoes to us.
