AHMEDABAD: A study by Gujarat University's department of psychology has revealed that around 80% of the girls using public transport experience harassment of one sort or another. What is even more shocking is that 69% of the girls report being harassed by men over 70 years of age!

Prof Ashwin Jansari of the psychology department said that for the study, a sample size of 361 college girls was surveyed. All these girls travelled by public transport.

"We wanted to find out the scale on which the girls are harassed and forward our findings to the authorities and the police so that they could take measures to protect them. We are going to recommend that at many places like Lal Darwaja and Kalupur, there should be women police in plainclothes to prevent girls' harassment," said Jansari.

According to Jansari, the aim of the study is to highlight the different kinds of harassment girls going to various colleges in the city by public transport have to face. "Though the sample size was small, the findings are startling," he said. Of the 361 girls surveyed, 170 were from Arts faculty, 140 from Commerce and 61 from Science faculty.

According to the study, only 60 girls said that they were not subjected to verbal harassment. Of the 361 girls surveyed, 301 said they had to bear with vulgar comments, 238 alleged they were harassed by conductors and another 210 said they were harassed by drivers.

The study further revealed that 242 girls were harassed by elderly people and another 313 said they were harassed by youngsters and college-going youths.
