After a sharp rise in insurgent activities in northern Afghanistan, the former Jihadi commander and current First Vice President of Afghanistan wore the army uniform, geared up like a soldier and went to the front line to fight with Taliban and other militant groups.
He began the crackdown in Faryab province and intends to spread it to other northern parts after eliminating militants from this province.
The operation has been going on successfully under his leadership with at least 250 militants so far surrendered and at least 200 others killed, a count provided by head of the province’s council.
During this operation, Dostum’s convoy came under armed attack in Qaisar District yesterday. He escaped unharmed but in the retaliatory action eight insurgents were killed and 13 others detained.
Knowing the fact that it is war and anything unwanted can happen, Dostum has taken two of his sons with him to the front line. Dostum says the reason he took his sons to the battle field is because his countrymen’s blood is not cheaper than the blood of his sons.
“My countrymen’s blood ain’t cheaper than my sons! Yar M. & Babur fight like all other soldiers.” a post on Dostum’s twitter account stated.
The First Vice President’s this unique step might be an alarm to those leaders who issue statements from fortified palaces but neither they nor their family members have entered the battlefield to experience the reality on the ground.
