Did Khalid Shamim call Dr Imran’s killers after the murder? - thenews.com.pk

ISLAMABAD: The British authorities want their Pakistani counterparts to verify if the caller who had contacted Dr Imran Farooq’s killers on a mobile in London while using a Karachi landline number, now known to be located at the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, 12 minutes after the brutal assassination was Khalid Shamim.

Khalid Shamim, who had been an employee of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, went missing from Karachi three years ago on January 5, 2011, roughly three months after the puzzling murder of Imran Farooq, who was stabbed to death outside his North London residence in September 2010. Having conducted concentrated investigations into the murder case, which has become a challenge for the Scotland Yard, the British Police have already sought assistance from Pakistan to solve the case.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has already confirmed the British request at a press conference in Islamabad last week, saying: “We’ve referred the request to our legal team and will give our input to the British government soon.”

Well-informed sources in the Ministry of Interior say the Foreign and Commonwealth office (FCO) has requested the authorities in Islamabad to help trace and identify the two murder suspects and their handlers who belong to Pakistan. The request letter by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) states that the Scotland Yard has proof that Mohsin Ali Syed and Muhammad Kashif Khan Kamran killed Dr Imran Farooq on September 16, 2010 outside his London residence. Hardly 12 minutes after the murder (which took place at 1727 hours (5:27pm), a phone call was made from a Karachi landline number (009221-36947016) at 1739 hours (5:39 PM) to a Mobilink mobile number (number 0300-8252044). The landline number was owned by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) which was used by the caller (generally believed to be Khalid Shamim) to talk to the killers in London (for four minutes and 22 seconds) on their mobile phone which had international roaming facility.

As this scribe dialed the Karachi landline number out of curiosity, it transpired that the number (021-36947016) was not installed at the KWSB office. The lady, who picked up the phone and refused to be identified, said: ‘This is not the Karachi Water Board office number. We live in this house which is actually located in the Karachi Water Board Employees Colony’. Asked if the number is installed at Khalid Shamim’s residence, the lady said: ‘Khalid Bhai does not live here. He used to be our next door neighbour but nobody knows about his whereabouts now.’

As things stand, the British authorities not only want their Pakistani counterparts to ascertain the identity of the caller from Karachi who had talked to Dr Imran’s killers, they also want their help to trace out and arrest the suspected killers (Mohsin Ali and Kashif Khan) and their suspected handlers (Khalid Shamim and Hammad Siddiqi).

In the past three years, Beena Khalid, the wife of Khalid, has repeatedly approached the Sindh High Court and the Supreme Court of Pakistan, seeking to recover her husband. However, the Sindh Police have simply failed to locate him despite repeated court directions.

According to Beena Khalid, her husband was whisked away in a car bearing official registration number plate by intelligence personnel on the night of January 5, 2011. At the time of the incident, he was getting money from an ATM in the Malir Halt area while his family was sitting in the car. Beena says Khalid was an accountant with the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board who was neither involved in any criminal activity nor affiliated with any political party. However, she concedes that her husband had been picked up in connection with Dr Imran Farooq’s murder.

The story goes that a member of the National Assembly from Karachi had actually been tasked by his overseas bosses to physically eliminate Imran Farooq. He had subsequently assigned the job to Khalid Shamim who sought help from another friend Hammad Siddiqi, who provided him with two professional assassins -- Mohsin Ali Syed and Muhammad Kashif Khan Kamran. They were sent to London by Khalid Shamim on student visas to carry out the job.

Upon their arrival in London, both were briefed about Dr Imran Farooq’s routine by an unidentified man. They allegedly killed Imran soon afterwards and left for Colombo the same day instead of returning to Pakistan to mislead those investigating the case. But they were ordered by Khalid Shamim to return to Pakistan.

A secret agency reportedly recorded all conversations between Khalid and the two killers who themselves were to be eliminated upon their arrival in Karachi with a view to erasing all the traces in Imran’s murder case. The agencies detained the boys when they reached Karachi from Colombo and then made them to listen to the recordings of their conversations. They were quick to confess to the murder, for which they can only be charged in England and not in Pakistan. Khalid Shamim was arrested by the authorities a few days later from Karachi.
