DIAT plans to offer masters programme in cyber security
In a bid to provide skilled cyber security experts to DRDO laboratories, tri-services and private firms specialised in domain, city-based Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) is all set to launch masters programme in cyber security. The programme will train students to help them join DRDO, tri- services and private research firms. The two-year programme will begin by 2011. DIAT is the first defence institute to have undertaken such a programme.
Hacking is a serious threat to the nations security. Hackers can destroy our data, be it data of banks, stock exchanges, power plants or factories. The sole aim of the programme is to create awareness amongst scientists and trained personnel who can deal with cyber security, said professor Lalit M Patnaik, vice-chancellor, DIAT.
The two-year masters programme will focus specifically on issues related to cyber security such as legal challenges, technological aspects, ethical hacking, virus, malware and automated software. Our domain will primarily be defence-centric.
For instance, encryption and decryption of data is a highly mathematical topic and is of prime importance to the services. Till date, the methods used for maintaining secrecy on the war front are traditional and pose the threat of being encoded. With the advancement in technology, building trustworthy systems is the need of hour. We will create personnel who can develop such machines through this programme, he said.
With the prime aim at providing skilled cyber security experts to DRDO laboratories, tri- services and private firms specialised in domain, the programme will also throw light on traditional cryptography and steganography that involves transfer of maps and images and wireless security. With a capacity of 18 seats, admissions will be given through GATE and interviews. Engineering graduates from computers, IT and electronics branches can seek admission. The programme will be open for civilians as well and we will admit 5-8 civilians every year. The total capacity can also be increased to 25 if required.
The institute has procured laboratory equipment such as special software and high performance computing machines and organised a one-day workshop on cyber security on December 7, before the National Conference on Computational Engineering that is scheduled to occur from December 8 to 10.
We have roped in a number of other organisations including IITs, police and industry experts for the seminar, post which the syllabus would be finalised for the course, Patnaik added.
