Balasore: India's indigenously developed surface-to-surface ballistic missile 'Dhanush' was today test fired from a naval ship in the Bay of Bengal off Orissa coast.

The test launch was conducted from INS Subhadra, about 40 nautical miles from Chandipur in the sea, at around 2.30 pm, sources said.

'Dhanush', said to be the naval version of surface-to-surface missile 'Prithvi' was being exclusively developed for Indian navy and has a striking range of 250 km to 350 km.

It can be deployed as an anti-ship weapon as well as for destroying land targets depending on the range. It can carry both conventional and nuclear weapons in its operational stage.

Today's test launch, carried out by scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), had been tracked from its take-off to impact point through an integrated network of sophisticated radars and electro-optic instruments for data analysis, the sources said.

The 8.56 metre long missile had a launch weight of 4,600 kg and uses a single stage liquid propellant engine.

'Dhanush' was test fired for the first time on April 11, 2000, from the Chandipur-on-sea integrated test range (ITR) but had failed at the blast-off stage due to technical snag in its software system.

The second test was carried out from INS Subhadra on September 21, 2001. The two subsequent experiments were carried out on November 7, 2004 and December 28, 2005 from INS Subhadra and INS Rajput respectively, the sources said.

Ballistic missile, its just going to be used with a nuclear warhead. Prithvis are known to be India's most dependable platforms.

How come we never heard of this 'snag' then?

Its the Nuclear Triad in the Offing, Pakistan is going to be Hard Pressed to Challenge this, for quite sometime

.
There is no need to develop naval version of ballistic missile. We can nuke India, thats all it matters.

Lol, webby, i expected you to know much more than this...
Its ALL about second strike, especially for Pakistan as its a small country.

Ahh.........Yes. That Explains Everything:lol:

We Dont think of using Nuclear Warheads until our Opponent has used it because we know how much Damage it does and what will be the results. I Have faith on our Military and Govt of defending us.

Well Ours is not that Strategy. India always maintains a "no-first-use" nuclear policy but may Broke it if neccassary.
The Threats of Nuclear Warfare is the one makes India to be prepared with Its best. Advanced Technologies like "Missile Defence" and Suprise Strike Capability on Nuclear Bases has improved a lot. Not to forget the Indian Army main Goal is to become NGO Nuclear Warfare and we they already having a lot Exercises with other Amred Forces like This.

Has you cann see we are having a very Good Second Strike Capability. The Three Armed Forces is going to have Nuclear Strike Capable and use of Force MultiPlieir.

.
India is going towards very sound second strike capabilities. The last stop is a nuke sub. That would be done soon too. Dhanush is a strong step in that direction.
