In 2010, Pakistan appealed to the Hague's Permanent Court of Arbitration (CoA), complaining that the Kishanganga Hydroelectric Plant violates the Indus River Treaty

the court asked India late September to stop constructing any permanent works that would inhibit restoration of the river. While India cannot construct the dam, they can continue on the tunnel and power plant in hopes that the court will allow the project
You are going to be in huge shock Dadaji over kishanganga..................

Cleanup process for Dal lake, Jun 20, 2007

SRINAGAR: Despite Union government's fiscal grants to the tune of Rs 235.70 crore, there hasn't been any improvement in the conservation and restoration of Dal lake , according to a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report.

The total area of the lake in 1962 was 24 sq km, which has shrunk to 11.98 sq km due to encroachments. Add to this the constant inflow of excreta and garbage from nearby hotels, and what you have is a water body gasping for life.

Vice-chairman of Lakes and Waterways Development Authority Mir Naseem Ahmad, however, claims they've taken several steps towards restoration of the lake. "We have removed thousands of tress within the Dal and have even taken measures to rehabilitate the lake dwellers after acquiring 7,500 kanals of land at Bemina in Srinagar," said Mir.

Jammu & Kashmir HC had last year taken note of a PIL on the extinction of this famous lake and directed the different agencies involved with conservation and maintenance to pull out all the stops to restore the lake to its original shape.

Over 300 hotels, restaurants, government offices and residential complexes were put on demolition notice by the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) following HC's directions.

However, a division Bench of the HC passed a split judgment on a PIL filed for conservation of Dal lake on March 29, 2007. The Bench, comprising former Chief Justice, Justice Bashir Ahmad Khan and Justice Bashir Ahmad Kirmani also could not agree on the steps needed to be taken.

In a 41-page judgment, Chief Justice Khan ordered the demolition of all constructions within a strip of 130 feet from the centre of the road.

Jobs for 7,000 Kashmiri youths under 'Himayat' scheme: Jairam Ramesh

The Centre aims at giving jobs to nearly 7,000 youths in Jammu and Kashmir during the current fiscal under the 'Himayat' scheme, a job-oriented skill development project launched in 2010, Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said here today.

The scheme mostly covers school and college dropouts and those from poor financial background, Ramesh said, adding that jobs have already been provided to 1,700 beneficiaries ever since the programme was launched in December last year.

"Next month, nearly 2,000 youths will get appointment letters for various jobs and for 2012-13, our target is to provide employment to 7,000 youths from the state," he said.

Ramesh was addressing a group of beneficiaries, including women from far-flung areas of J&K, in Mohali near here.

Under the scheme, people have been placed at entry-level positions in hospitality, insurance and other sectors, Ramesh said, adding that while 134 beneficiaries were employed in Chandigarh, rest of them were absorbed by companies at Ludhiana, Delhi and Gurgaon and some in J&K itself.

The Centre intends to have training centres in all 140 blocks of J&K state, he said.

Announcing to hike relocation allowance for the beneficiaries to Rs 12,000 for six months from Rs 2,000 for two months, Ramesh said efforts will also be made to sort out the problem of accommodation for these youths and steps like providing them vacant government houses and hostels are under consideration.

The Centre is also trying to make the process of opening of bank accounts for these beneficiaries hassle-free, he said.

Dam works of 450 MW Baglihar(I) HEP

Power Development in Jammu and Kashmir has a long and distinguished history. 9MW Mohra Hydro-electric Plant, among the first of its kind in the subcontinent, was developed as early as 1905. The estimated hydel potential is about 20,000 MW, out of which projects of about 16,200 MW capacity have already been identified.

These projects are techno-economically viable, besides being eco-friendly and socially beneficial. In order to harness this potential in a sustained manner, the Government of J&K established the Jammu & Kashmir State Power Development Corporation Limited (JKSPDCL) which has been incorporated as Private limited company on 16th February 1995. The Corporation was incorporated to takeover, execute, complete, operate and maintain all power stations and power projects of the State.

The assets of all the power projects in the State, both existing and under implementation were transferred to the Corporation. The Corporation presently has 20 hydroelectric projects with installed capacity of 758.70MW located in various districts of Jammu & Kashmir including 450MW BHEP. The Corporation has Gas Turbines based on HSD with installed capacity of 175 MW at Pampore near Srinagar. In accordance with the State Hydel Policy, 2003 JKSPDC has allotted 10 small HEPs with a total capacity of 110.50 MWs under IPP phase-I. The State Government is presently reviewing existing State Hydel policy, 2003 for project implementation from 2-100MW to make it more investor friendly and thus attract investment and expertise from private players in the sector on a large scale.

Length: 1315m
Cost: Rs600+ crores
Current highest bridge (surface-deck clearance): Royal Gorge Bridge,Colorado,USA-321m above Arkansas river. Its a pedestrian bridge but is also used by cars. Millau Viaduct in France is 270m above the Tarn river and 343m above land. It'll remain the tallest due to the height of the pylons.

The Chenab bridge is part of the Jammu-Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway route and have the highest surface-deck clearance at 359m above the Chenab River.
