ABBOTTABAD: Despite losing one national and three provincial assemblies seats, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has once again emerged as the strong party in Abbottabad and Haripur districts, which was followed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The PML-N bagged 476856 votes as compared to PTI, which got 425562 ballots in three national and nine provincial constituencies in both the districts of Hazara division. The turn-out showed that voters of the PML-N have increased as compared to previous elections but still its heavyweights including two former chief ministers Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan and Pir Sabir Shah lost to the rival candidates.
The political observers believe that defeat of both the PML-N stalwarts was due to their poor performance and lack of close liaison with their electorate.According to the election results, the PML-N bagged 69568 votes from NA-17, 69532 from NA-18 and 114374 from NA-19 as compared to the PTI, which claimed 96185 from NA-1741061 from NA-18 and 116579 from NA-19. Ironically Umar Ayub Khan who bagged 11,374 votes lost the seat against Dr Raja Amir Zaman of the PTI who secured 116579 votes.
In five provincial assembly constituencies of Abbottabad district, the PTI took lead and managed to get 124190 votes against the PML-N 95938 votes. The PML-N has won two provincial seats from Abbottabad including PK-45 that was retained by Sardar Mehtab. The PTI got one provincial assembly seat while two seats went to independent candidates, Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani and Qalandar Lodhi.
Similarly, in four provincial seats of Haripur district, the PML-N succeeded to get 99192 votes and clinched only one seat of PK-49, which was won by Raja Faisal Zaman. The PTI while contesting on three out of four provincial assembly seats got 75799 votes and got two provincial assembly seats, one by Yousaf Ayub Khan from PK-50 and other by Faisal Zaman from PK-52, defeating Pir Sabir Shah.a
Interestingly, religious parties, which contested the general elections separately, have failed to muster support of the voters. The Jamaat-e-Islami, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and Muttahidda Deeni Mahaz were not able to impress the voters. The JI just managed to get 35,381 votes while JUI-F 36740 votes from both the districts.
The Muttahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) also contested elections on almost all the seats except two but failed to woo the voters. The Pakistan Peoples Party, which could not get a single seat just claimed 39918 votes after contesting polls on three national and three provincial assembly constituencies.
Tehrik-e-Suba Hazara (TSH) also failed to woo the voters. It also could not get a single seat and just got 59907 votes from two national and six provincial constituencies.
TSH chief Sardar Haider Zaman who contested from NA-18 has got 36286 votes.Independent candidates have got 177748 votes from all the national and provincial seats in both the districts and succeeded to clinch two provincial seats from Abbottabad.
