Compaque = mother board died one month after warranty period completed (3 years)
Toshiba = Slammed it hard on my bed twice while running and it kept going, used for about 3.5 years without issues
Sony Vaio - used for 5/6 month only no issues

Acer = Acer bought 8 years ago, still working (not even kids use it now saying its too slow (windows Vista)
Toshiba = Stepped over it, broke screen - threw away
Toshiba = Spilled tea not working
Toshiba = bought 7 years ago, dropped it, broke screen (still working with a small black spot on screen)

Lenovo = used 18 months, No issues
Lenovo = used 1 year, No issues

Acer = bought 4 years ago, still working
Lenovo = used 14 months, voltage surge, mother board fried
Lenovo = 2 years old, No issues
Toshiba = just bought it (touch scree, works great)

I am a very heavy computer user, I am on computer about 16 hours a day, 8/9 in office, remaining at home. All my kids have their own, use them 4/5 hours a day and are very rough.
I found Acers to be quite good too except I had the same problem with both my Acers, their power jack wires (internal soldering ) gets loose, probably because I have them on for almost 8/10 hours constantly on daily basis, an dI normally fix them myself at home. But Toshiba has always been my favourite, very robust.

Blue = Official
Black = Personal
Bold = Still have them

R u sure Toshiba satellite series r reliable enough

There are many configurations (processor, Ram and HD) within each model, make sure to get one which meets your usage requirement. Normally Business use machines are more robust and pack high performance combinations. you can use a guide like below to choose (almost all suppliers have similar guides to help you choose the right one)

Have had multiple laptops, your situation calls for Acer to the rescue believe me, more punch for less cost. They have recently released E5-573G-57UU, If you can find one in a store near you, or any thing with these or better specs (at least CPU wise), go for it. You can find expert review of that model series on notebookcheck dot net, can't post the links sorry.
Any laptop will last you longer if you are caring, but some laptops won't under abusive circumstances, this is where Sony Vaio range comes into play, had one for 10 years, smashed it to the ground as it completely refused to give up ;)

For gaming laptops are no good, its desktops that have the power.
Branded ones alienware (its dell) is good but expensive. Economical ones are from lenovo, but quality wise only thinkpads are good.
If you need it for everyday use then dell laptops are durable ones but come on board gpus or midrange graphics card.
Notebook / Laptop Reviews and News - NotebookCheck.net is where i go for comparison of systems. If you are in US (or getting it from there) then you have lot of options.
