Officials suspect that these arms are also meant to disturb India’s northeastern states which have witnessed peace since the Sheikh Hasina government handed over all insurgent leaders hiding in her country to Delhi in 2009.

NEW DELHI: In a sensational development, top Bangladeshi military officials have come under scanner of the Sheikh Hasina government after Chinese boats carrying arms entered Bangladesh waters and arms were smuggled into the country allegedly for local extremist groups and insurgent outfits in northeast India.

ET has learnt that no less than top leadership of the coast guard has come under scanner of Bangladesh government for its role in the alleged smuggling case. Dhaka has apprised Delhi of the latest development and is investigating the role of foreign powers in creating disturbance ahead of elections in Bangladesh. Security establishments of both sides are coordinating closely in this case.

It is understood that the smuggled arms had reached Dhaka and may be used to create unrest ahead of elections towards the end of the year. The first cache of arms was allegedly smuggled in December 2016 through Chittagong port. This is reminiscent of the 2004 incident when 10 trucks of Chinese arms meant for ULFA & other terror groups were nabbed in Chittagong. Tareque Zia, son of then-PM Khaleda Zia, was later found to be involved in the smuggling case.

In the new cases, when arms were smuggled or tried to be smuggled, coast guard ships were curiously missing from the coastal waters, raising suspicion of role of senior officers, hinted persons familiar with the matter.

Bangladeshi officials suspect that these arms are also meant to disturb India’s northeastern states which have witnessed peace since the Sheikh Hasina government handed over all insurgent leaders hiding in her country to Delhi in 2009. The Coast Guard has not yet ordered enquiry into the smuggling incidents and this have raised suspicion about role of its leadership in the episode.

. . .
China has easy alternative like land border to send arms with ease if it wants to , why bother going the long way ?

. . . .
With India if it wants to send weapons to India.

I doubt China will do anything like that in BD.
Why not? When there are few corrupt officers who want to make some quick bucks. Plus, Indian borders with China is not an ideal route to be caught smuggling arms. So, China might have taken the easy way.

. . .
They do that to MM rebels. They have easier route through AP or Myanmar. Why bother the riskiest route through BoB.
Onspot Man,that route is much better then, the one from BD.BD route is populated and secured by BD Forces but route from MM is unsecure and unguarded heck half of insurgencies operating in NE have bases in MM.

Does the name Tarique Rahman ring a bell? Yes that SoB who was involved in arms smuggling providing weapons to the proscribed ULFA. This time around also the upper echelons of the coast guard are apparently involved. One can never trust these snakes.

Security pact between Myanmar and India has made it very difficult to smuggle arms through that route, and the Arunachal border is guarded by the ITBP. These corrupt to the core Bangladeshis seems to be the best option.

Another theory doing rounds is that the arms were meant to be supplied to the illegal BD immigrants in Assam to foment trouble there. The final deadline of the National Registry of Citizens is fast approaching and thousands of aliens are awaiting confinement and deportation.

.
Looks like a counter move from RAW scums to corner BD!!!! It's a ploy to get rid of whatever intelligent folks BD has in the military!!! India is taking no chances with BD given what happened in SL, Maldives etc. Now is the time for BD to show some resistance......

 Those so called Illegal Bengalis dont need arms. They are protected by the Indian army. 100 rupees just do the magic in India.

Sk. Hasina is an iron lady. Those terrorist groups which r trying to create trouble in Bangladesh ahead of our all important public election will get crushed by our honourable iron lady.

It's good to see that the security agencies from both side of the borders r working together on this matter. The only way we can keep India-Bd borders safe from the hand of terrorists is by exchanging intelligence with each other.
