NEW DELHI: The capital crawled again on Monday evening when sudden downpour brought down many trees and caused waterlogging on major arterial roads. Non-functional traffic signals added to the traffic woes.
On several stretches, including IP flyover, Vikas Marg, Ring Road, ITO, India Gate, Azad Market, BRT corridor, Mori Gate, GPO, Ashoka Road, Savitri flyover, commuters took several hours to cover even 1km to 2km.
As water up to four feet submerged several roads and hundreds of trees fell, the space available for vehicular movement during the evening peak hour shrunk considerably. One of the worst affected areas was central Delhi where water filled up under both the clover leaves of IP flyover. As a result, people headed back home from work to trans-Yamuna areas and Ghaziabad via Vikas Marg were stuck for hours. The entire road was filled with water leaving no space for traffic. It had a cascading effect on crossings like ITO, Tilak Marg-Mathura Road, Bhairon Road, India Gate, BSZ Marg and Ring Road till Hanuman Setu.
"I was stuck at the same spot at ITO bridge for over an hour. The road under IP flyover was completely flooded and traffic on the bridge was just not moving. The jam started at India Gate," said Prateek Gulati, a resident of Supreme Enclave, Mayur Vihar.
The situation was equally bad at Azadpur where the railway underbridge got completely submerged after the pumps stopped working. "Cars were completely underwater and many buses and autos broke down. It took me almost three hours to cross the stretch," said Rakesh Kumar, who was headed out to Karnal.
Massive waterlogging was witnessed at GPO in central Delhi. As a result, movement of vehicles from east-west Delhi was badly affected as one of the major roads, Ashoka Road, was blocked. A hoarding fell near Pragati Maidan at Mathura Road and traffic police had to divert vehicles till the hoarding was removed from the main road.
In south Delhi, there was a major jam in BRT corridor. Waterlogging was reported from Moolchand, Chirag Dilli, Savitri and Siri Fort crossings. "Traffic was barely moving in BRT and the blinding rain made it tough to spot the small medians separating the bus and car lanes. I took over two hours to reach Nehru Place from Saket," said Prerna Sharma, an engineer. Water also collected outside Yamuna Bank and Jhandewalan Metro stations.
The storm caused power cuts in large parts of the city due to which traffic lights stopped working. "Waterlogging and tree falls blocked precious road space during the evening rush hour. Till the roads were cleared out, movement of traffic could not be resumed. Traffic lights also stopped working but this was tackled as staff was posted there to control the situation. However, we cant do anything about waterlogging," said a senior traffic police official.a
