Defence Min approves buying 1 C-130 J Super Hercules aircraft

NEW DELHI: The Defence Ministry on Thursday approved the buying of one C-130 J Super Hercules aircraft, worth about Rs 900 crore, to replace the one that had crashed in 2014 killing five crew members, including four officers.

The decision to purchase a new one was taken by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

The aircraft, worth over Rs 900 crore, had crashed while practising a tactical operation along with another C-130J Super Hercules aircraft after taking off from Agra on March 28, 2014.

The IAF had inducted six C-130J Super Hercules aircraft which were bought from the US at a cost of around Rs 6,000 crore (USD 1 billion) in 2010. India has already ordered for six additional aircraft.

The DAC has also approved procurement of 58 night vision goggles for pilots, for night enablement, Defence sources said.

The DAC reviewed progress of capital acquisition proposals in current financial year. Since May 2016-10 acquisition schemes worth approximately Rs 16,000 crore have been approved including 6 at CCS level, sources said.

In addition, four major acquisitions worth Rs 15,000 crore have been cleared by MoD and have been forwarded for consideration of CCS.


With over Rs 31,000 crore major acquisitions either contracted or at advanced stage - DAC urged the services and the Ministry to expedite process.

It was also said that as against 329 Acceptance of Necessity (AON) worth over Rs 5 lakh crore in pipeline in April 2014, today there are about 235 AONs in pipeline.

That order for 6 C-130J-30 Super Hercs was placed last year bro. Thr first orders of that batch will begin in early 2017 and will be delivered to the IAF's second dedicated Special Operations SQN in Panagarh AFB (West Bengal). This news is about bringing the 77 "Veiled Vipers' back up to full strength and is very welcome indeed. There will be 2 full SQNs (12 a/c) of C-130J-30 specialised for Spec Ops by 2019 in service with the IAF.

A shame there is no news on the Rafale or S-70B still.

Why not invest half the money on buying sufficient number of LCA & the other half on development of Aerospace tech?

Fair enough bro but I don't think this suggestoon would be of any real value and would only hurt India

1) The IAF's SQN is in DECLINE, the MKI and LCA are insufficent to fill in the gaps.
1b) The LCA/MKI deals are SEPERATE to the Rafale deal and we cannot be duped into thinking any funds "saved" by not getting the Rafale would automatically go to the LCA project- that is not how these things work. The LCA project has its own budget and has 120 units on order, let HAL/ADA deliver these birds before throwing more billons at them (let's not forget that HAL is sitting on BILLIONS of USD in advances from the GoI, they are not strapped for cash).
2) 50% of the value of any deal inked with the French will be inveted BACK into INDIA and much of this will spent in creating vast numbers of highly skilled workers, setting up a vital eco system in India and so on and so forth
3)The ToT that will come with the Rafale will help boost India's aerospace industry and the deal will also help concrete ties with a global technology superpower (France).

The pros FAR outweigh the costs where the Rafale is concerned.

Indeed, India has allowed itself to be commited to the Rafale one way or another it HAS to go for it. There is no plan b at this point, there is no substitute waiting in the wings (no matter what LM, SAAB or Boeing say). It is a case of now or never.

Il-76 transport would be $50 million. The cost of operation for Il-76 is higher which offsets the high cost of the C-130J.
Plus the C-130J has equipment for supporting special forces missions.
