NEY WORK – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon offered Pakistan assistance on Friday to deal with the deadly heatwave in Karachi and other parts of lower Sindh which has claimed at least 1,001 lives, Radio Pakistan reported.

“The United Nations would respond positively if a request comes from Pakistan to deal with the situation,” a spokesperson of the World Body Chief said, while addressing the media in New York. However, the spokesperson added Pakistan has so far not requested for UN assistance in dealing with the crisis. Death toll from killer Karachi heatwave surpasses 1,000. Temperatures in the metropolis may have dropped for the first time in six days below 36 degrees Celsius but the number of fatalities from sunstroke and dehydration continued to mount on Thursday.

Some 72 deaths were reported during the day as Karachi and Sindh’s denizens reeled from the sweltering heat, taking the fatality count to 1,001 – 179 of whom remain unidentified. The heat wave in Karachi coincided with severe electricity cuts, leaving many without fans, water or light, and the beginning of the holy month of Ramazan, when many Muslims do not eat or drink during daylight hours. Meanwhile, weather experts have issued a chilling warning about the extreme weather and climate events that people in Pakistan and neighbouring India can expect with more frequency. “The region will have more of such events in future as well,” warned Dr Qamaruzzaman Chaudhry, UN World Meteorological Organisation’s special envoy and former Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) director-general.

you are correct, and i was not contradicting islam in its true form which is simple and meant to bring comforts and simplifications to people, and not impose constraints and discomforts on them.

what i was talking about is a large section of south asian muslims who want to "look and act more muslim" than others ( and not be muslim ) and are in constant competition... for example, someone told me that he sees people praying in mosques in loud whispers, as if to show that only they are muslim, and not bothering if they are disturbing others.

these are the ones who create fear among people so that people will think "oh, i am feeling such discomfort in this heat and i know that people have died but i won't break my fast because if someone comes to know they will call me to the local mosque and tell me i have sinned and maybe boycott me".

this is more so in modern india than elsewhere... but this is also in pakistan because 1000+ people dying of heat will have this component too.

Actually most people who died couldn't recognize their severe condition and they may have thought that "Thora time reh gaya hai ... Guzar letey hain" But unfortunately they couldn't spend little more time ........... RIP

It has now hit 1100, please pray for the people of Pakistan.
My prayers are with people who are enduring the brunt of climate but as @hinduguy has said in his post, people must take care of themselves.
It must be tough observing Ramjaan Fast in this harsh weather, but GOD moves in mysterious ways. As i would like to believe during tough times in life, one must consider these too as benevolence of Almighty for letting us go off leniently for our acts in life sparing harsher punishment.

Temperatures are in range of 40-45. This is not very high to cause so many deaths. Why is this happening.
